Japanese wrestling legend-turned-politician Antonio Inoki has died aged 79.

In the world of wrestling, Inoki trained several wrestlers including Akira Maeda, Bad News Allen, the first Tiger Mask, Keiji Muto, Riki Choshu, Shinsuke Nakamura, Tatsumi Fujinami and Rocky Romero.

On February 20, 1943, during the Second World War, Inoki was born in Yokohama. He formed New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1972 and entered politics in 1989 when he was elected to the Japanese House of Councilors. His weight is 224 lbs. and his height is 6 ft. 3 in. (1.91 m) (102 kg)

Inoki, Antonio He was even the boxer Muhammad Ali’s opponent in the 1976 “bout of the century,” which, according to analysts, served as the forerunner to modern mixed martial arts. He was known as Japan’s Dennis Rodman.

Known as Japan's Dennis Rodman, Inoki fought boxer Ali in the 1976 'bout of the century' - a fight which experts say served as a predecessor to modern day mixed martial arts

 

Inoki represented Japan during his tenure in government in talks with leaders such as Saddam Hussein of Iraq and Fidel Castro of Cuba.

Inoki served as a representative for professional wrestling, bringing important events to nations like China and Russia.

Inoki faced American Ric Flair in the “Collision in Korea” in 1995, a two-day event held in Pyongyang’s enormous May Day Stadium that reportedly drew 380,000 spectators and special guests like Ali.

More than 70,000 spectators attended his retiring match, which was place on April 4, 1998, at the Tokyo Dome.

Inoki was also admitted to the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010.

Yahoo Japan reported that Inoki had passed away aged 79 following a string of health issues in recent years. No cause of death has been revealed.

His officially recognized wives were two. He was first married to Mitsuko Baisho in 1971 but divorced her in 1987.

He married Tazuko Tada as his new wife but she also died in 2019.
