Agnel rose to worldwide notoriety after winning gold in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2010 European Championships, breaking French and championship records.
Two years later, he won gold in the 200m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle relay at the London Olympics.
In the 2013 global championships, he won gold in the same two events.
He went to Rio in 2016 to retain his 200m freestyle title, but he didn’t make it through the preliminary rounds, and he declared his departure from swimming immediately after.

The swimmer was detained on suspicion of assault and s3xual assault at his residence in Paris on Thursday and taken into police custody in Mulhouse, eastern France.
At a news conference, Mulhouse public prosecutor Edwige Roux-Morizot said he recognizes the gravity of the claims against him, adding that the swimmer did not feel any compulsion.
The prosecution claimed that the events constituted assault or s3xual assault because of the large age gap between him and the complainant, whom she identified as Naome Horter, one of Agnel’s coach Lionel Horter’s children.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the French Swimming Federation stated that it would file a legal lawsuit in the issue.
The Federation has been informed of Mr. Agnel’s acknowledgment of the substance of the charges against him.
The Federation has formally decided to become a civil party before the Mulhouse judicial court, which the Federation strongly opposes.

Franck Horter, his younger brother, was also a great swimmer. He is the coach of Roxana Maracineanu, the 2000 Olympic vice-champion.
He currently works as an official at the Mulhouse Olympic Swimming, one of the France swimming poles. He coaches several international medalists Amaury Leveaux, Aurore Mongel, and Sébastien Rouault.
When Laure Manaudou relocated to Mulhouse in 2008, he trained her.
