Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Antoine J. Hill, 29, was arrested yesterday on a warrant for grand theft, grand theft of an automobile, and fraudulent use of debit cards after allegedly stealing a car from a man who gave him a job. He also had an active warrant for domestic violence.

On May 11, the victim tried to help Hill by letting him wash dishes at the Best Western Gateway Grand. After working for about an hour and a half, Hill reportedly asked for a break, and the victim let him sit in his car. The victim had left his keys in the car, and Hill allegedly drove away in the car and did not return until later in the evening in spite of texts and phone calls from the victim.

The victim was also notified by his bank that a fraudulent charge of $30 was made on his debit card; Hill reportedly admitted that he found the victim’s temporary debit card in the car and used it to get gas. After driving the car around for several hours, Hill reportedly returned the car.

Later in the evening, the victim reportedly received notifications showing more fraudulent activity on the debit card, including a transfer of $350 to Hill’s CashApp account and other CashApp transfers to other accounts.

Hill also had an active warrant for a November 2022 domestic violence incident. Charges in a sworn complaint for a January 2023 domestic violence incident were dropped a few weeks after it was filed.

Hill, a designated Career Offender whose listed address is GRACE Marketplace, has a juvenile criminal history that spread over nine years, four felony convictions (none violent), and two misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in November 2021. Judge Tatum Davis set bail at $152,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
