Rapper Gunplay Religion: Does He Practices Santeria?

Indeed, Gunplay practices Santeria, a religious path that he believes deepens his connection with the divine.

Santería, also called Regla de Ocha, Regla Lucumí, or Lucumí, emerged in late 19th century Cuba as a fusion of the Yoruba religion from West Africa and Spiritism.

The practice lacks a centralized authority, resulting in a diverse range of followers known as creyentes or believers.

Santería is a polytheistic faith centering around oricha deities, named after traditional Yoruba divinities.

These orichas influence individual personalities, and practitioners maintain a personal connection with a specific oricha.

The oricha is regarded as subservient to Olodumare, a transcendent creator deity.

In Santería, Olodumare is the source of aché, a supernatural energy that permeates the universe and can be harnessed through rituals.

Gunplay’s affiliation with Santería reflects his spiritual journey and connection to a tradition that weaves African heritage and Caribbean spirituality, fostering a distinctive and deeply personal relationship with the divine.

Gunplay, originally named Richard Morales Jr., was born in 1979, carrying the weight of a challenging upbringing shaped by his parent’s divorce.

His mixed heritage of a Puerto Rican father and Jamaican mother added to his diverse background.

During his formative years, he experienced the upheaval of family separation, causing him to move from Opa-Locka, Florida, to Carol City with his mother and younger brother after his father returned to Puerto Rico.

At 15, Gunplay left high school to avoid repeating a grade.

This pivotal choice propelled him down a risky path involving the use and sale of cocaine.
