Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Obadiah Savoy Dillard, 45, has been convicted by a jury of making a bomb threat, attempted robbery, and assault at the Wells Fargo Bank on NW 13th Street on August 8, 2018. Sentencing is scheduled for September 20; the jury added an enhancement to the first two charges because he was wearing a mask. Jury deliberation lasted just over two hours.

Dillard was arrested after 911 calls were received from the Wells Fargo Bank; Dillard entered the bank wearing a mask and gloves and threatened to “blow this place up.” He also tried to take a customer’s wallet before riding away on a bicycle. He was later found in an apartment at nearby Georgetown Apartments and arrested.

A previous trial ended in a mistrial when Dillard hit his attorney in the courtroom, knocking him unconscious. A jury found him guilty in June of aggravated battery with bodily harm, and he was sentenced to 30 years in state prison.

Assistant State Attorney Rich Chang led the prosecution team.
