SUCCEEDING Heather Stefanson to become the premier of Manitoba, Canada is Wab Kinew.
While he’s known for his political career, his wife Lisa Monkman is a physician who hopes to close the gap between both Western and Indigenous medicine.

Who is Wab Kinew’s wife, Lisa Monkman?
On September 27, 2016, Wab Kinew tied the knot with Lisa Monkman.
Lisa is a doctor and physician from Winnipeg; she is based in Dauphin, Manitoba.
One of her career goals is for Western medicine to understand and incorporate more Indigenous practices into their healthcare methods.
“I think that the beauty of Indigenous health practices lays with the fact that they look at the broader picture, it’s not sub-specialized or narrowly focused in anyway” she told CBC.
“I think that Western medical practice provides you with very rigorous training but it is disease focused and it often misses the other aspects of the individual…
“…like the very holistic way of looking at personal health and well being incorporating your emotional, spiritual, mental and physical health.”
How many kids does Kinew have?
Kinew and Monkman have one child together, a son who was born in May 2017.
The New Democratic Party leader also has two older children from a previous relationship.
“When you become a parent, you learn to love in a new way,” the politician said of his life as a father.

“It’s like learning to taste a new flavour for the first time, see a new colour that you’ve never seen before, hear music you’ve never heard.
“It’s the best song you’ve ever heard. It’s the best flavour you’ve ever tasted. It’s the most beautiful colour you’ve seen in your life.”

When was Kinew elected premier?
On October 4, 2023, Kinew was elected the 25th Premier of Manitoba.
Due to his First Nations heritage, he is the first Indigineous provincial leader in Canada’s history to hold the title.
Kinew is also the Leader of the Opposition in Manitoba and the Leader of Manitoba’s New Democratic Party.
“That is a testament to our province and country moving forward,” he said of his election victory.
He commented to Reuters: “This is a great victory for all of us in Manitoba.
“Long way to go, but you cannot tell me that we haven’t made progress.
“We can do amazing things when we stand together as one province.”
