Who was Philadelphia journalist Josh Kruger?

Josh Kruger was a Philadelphia-based journalist who wrote for The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Citizen, and various other publications.

He was widely known as an advocate for Philadelphia’s homeless population, community members who were battling drug addiction, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Josh previously served under Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration in the Office of Homeless Services.

What happened to him?

At about 1.28am on Monday, October 2, 2023, Josh Kruger was shot seven times in the abdomen and in the chest while in his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

According to NBC News, after the cops were called to Josh’s residence, he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead around 2.13am.

A few weeks before his death, Josh made a chilling Instagram post alleging that he felt targeted.

His post read: “Yesterday afternoon, in a homophobic or other pathetic act, someone sent a heavy glass egg (?!) projectile through my front window.

“It’s caused about $400 worth of damage. It was seemingly a targeted act.”

He concluded: “If you recognize this car or driver please let me know.”

The post included an image of a black Dodge Ram 1500 with an unidentified person in the front seat.

Has anyone been arrested in connection with his death?

Police identified 19-year-old Robert Edmond Davis as the shooter.

Philadelphia Police Department Lieutenant Hamilton Marshmond said the suspect in the case is believed to have known Kruger and might have been counseling him prior to the incident.

Addressing reporters, Lieutenant Hamilton stated: “At this time we believe that Mr. Kruger was trying to help Mr. Davis, and they were acquaintances.

“He was just trying to help him just get through life.”

Hamilton added that the suspect is yet to be apprehended.

Investigators still have yet to determine a possible motive for the suspect, though the police have issued an arrest warrant.
