Felix Louis N’Jai, 52 had been camping at the site to celebrate his friend’s wedding when he, the groom, and another guest went into the water around 10:30 am on Sunday morning.

The victim’s friend, Jim Keenan, described what he saw that day.

Kennan said: “And then a shark came up, grabbed Felix by the neck supposedly, brought him down and that was the last they saw.

“Two other guys rushed out of the water, turned around and they saw blood and some commotion in the water.

“But no Felix and that was it.”

A body has not been found so authorities have been unable to confirm whether N’Jai is dead or if he was attacked by a shark.

The park service is currently working with the coroner’s office to figure out their next steps as the search for the body has been called off, according to The Mirror.

An expert has suggested that this case is rare as bodies are typically recovered after a shark attack, according to The Mirror.

Professor Chris Lowe, the head of a shark lab at California State University Long Beach, said sharks tend to stop their attacks after they realize they have attacked a human, as that is not their preferred prey.

Lowe said: “For me it has been surprising to hear that nothing has been recovered.

“It’s very odd, especially being relatively close to shore.

“For a body to completely disappear is very strange and rare.”

N’Jai was also an elite kit surfer and had hoped to represent The Gambia in the Olympics.

Tributes poured in for N’Jai as a group of fellow kite surfers gathered at Crissy Field, California to mourn him on Monday, according to NBC Bay Area.

Kennan said: “We all got in a circle and we listen to the story. And there wasn’t a dry eye in the group.”

Another friend, David Thawley, said: “Felix was everything to every one of his friends.

“We felt like he was part of our family, and I know so many others felt this way too.

“He brought pure joy, love, and light everywhere he went. He radiated like the sun.

“I developed a level of love for Felix that I’ve never experienced in anything other than a family.”
