An explosion at a California correctional facility led to four deputies being taken to the hospital.

Around 9.40am Tuesday, an explosion was reported at a mobile training facility at the Pitchess Detention Center, also known as the Wayside Jail.

The facility reportedly caught on fire, trapping deputies as they were qualifying for their service weapons training, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

The office described the fire as a ‘training accident.’

Four people were transported to nearby hospitals – by other deputies.

Two deputies were reported to have critical burns, while the other two were said to have minor injuries.

A mobile range was reported to have caught on fire with deputies inside as they were qualifying for their service weapons training.

Overhead footage showed fire trucks dousing the flames at the facility, which is located on the 29300 block of The Old Road in Castaic.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department also reported a fire inside of a range training facility and were taking ‘defensive positions’ around the area, according to radio traffic.
