Heavy Rains in Lachung

Currently, there are several tourists who were caught and stranded in places such as Lachen and Lachung in north Sikkim where some of the well-known tourist destinations like Yumthang and Gurudongmar are situated. Reportedly, the people have been securely rescued and brought to safer places near Gangtok. Recently, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a fresh warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of north Bengal over the weekend raising fears of landslides and rising water levels in rivers. Moreover, even authorities present in Sikkim forced tourists not to visit some of the popular tourist destinations in the northern parts of the Himalayan state.

According to the officials, a few hundred tourists, who got stranded in places such as Lachen and Lachung in north Sikkim where some of the popular tourist destinations such as Yumthang and Gurudongmar are situated have been rescued and safeguarded and have been brought to places where they are secured. Reportedly, the amount of rainfall recorded at Gangtok between June 1 and June 16 is the highest this year has been compared to 2020 and 2021. In this present year, the capital of Sikkim has received 632.5 mm of rain during the period which is compared to 232.1 mm and 486.6 mm in 2020 and 2021 during the same span of time. Significantly, the areas and districts of north Bengal have shown heavy rain for a while now.

However, in the last 24 hours, some places like Buxadur and Hasimara in Alipirduar district saw around 250 mm and 230 mm of rain. There are several places that have registered more than 50 mm of rain. Reportedly, the water level in some parts such as Torsa and Kaljani has risen, and some low-lying areas that have been issued in Alipurdaur and Cooch Behar districts. According to the regional office situated in Kolkata, the current conditions are favourable and the monsoon is likely to cover the remaining parts of West Bengal in the next two to three days.
