A Texas yoga teacher accused of murdering her boyfriend’s professional cyclist ex tried to escape from jail during a medical appointment, it is claimed.

Kaitlin Armstrong 35, allegedly ran from two correctional officers after a doctor’s appointment in Austin as they walked her back to the car to take her back to jail, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday.

However, Armstrong, who spent 43 days on the run before her arrest last year, only managed to stay on the lam for about 10 minutes before deputies caught up to her.

The officers said she ran more than a block into a neighborhood, but remained in their sight the entire time. The amateur yoga teacher was taken to the Dell Seton Medical Center after the attempted escape.

It’s not clear whether Armstrong was wearing shackles on her arms or legs, or what medical treatment prompted the appointment outside of the jail clinic. The corrections officers did not draw their firearms, but more details on how she was apprehended would not be disclosed, a spokesperson said.

The former yoga teacher is said to have killed Wilson on May 11 2022 with two bullet holes in her head and another in her chest after finding out her boyfriend Colin Strickland  was having an affair with her

Armstrong has pleaded not guilty to Wilson’s May 2022 murder, and her trial is scheduled to begin on October 30. She is currently being held in Travis County Jail on $3.5 million bond. She faces up to 99 years in prison if convicted.

She is accused of gunning down Wilson, a 25-year-old competitive gravel and mountain bike racer from Vermont, was in Austin for a race she was among the favorites to win in when she was found shot to death. Armstrong allegedly flew into a jealous rage after discovering pro-cyclist Wilson, 25, was seeing her boyfriend, Colin Strickland, 35.

Armstrong fled Texas soon after police interviewed her following the murder, travelling to Costa Rica from Newark Airport, in New Jersey, before she was arrested at a hostel in Costa Rica over a month later.

Authorities said at the time she paid for a nose job and dyed her hair brown after fleeing the US, using her sisters passport to fly from the US. Armstrong also used several aliases while on the run, using the name ‘Ari’ to woo a man she met in a tattoo shop while on the run.

A federal judge has dismissed the charge of unlawful flight against Armstrong, but she may face the charge again in future if prosecutors deem it necessary.

Police arrested the her after an anonymous tip and surveillance footage outside of Wilson’s apartment supposedly showed the yoga instructor’s car.

Detectives used an open misdemeanor warrant on theft of services to quiz her about Wilsons’s death after receiving an anonymous tip that she had flown into a rage months before.

Armstrong’s car, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee, was spotted driving past Wilson’s friends home, where the gravel bike champion had been staying.

Police later discovered Wilson had gone to dinner with Armstrong’s boyfriend the night of the murder. Strickland told police the two of them took a swim at Deep Eddy Pool before eating, and he dropped her off at 8.36pm.

He stopped briefly to text Armstrong that he had visited a friend and that his phone had run out of battery. Armstrong was allegedly tracking Wilson using the app for cyclists and runners, Strava.

Search warrants revealed that Armstrong visiting a gun range with her sister before the killing, and was given $450,000 by Strickland, who also admitted to purchasing two firearms between the end of 2021 and start of 2022 for himself and Armstrong.

Strickland reportedly asked Armstrong to return the money he lent to her for an investment account, but she kept it before heading to Costa Rica on May 18.

He admitted the affair with Wilson to the police, telling them that he had changed her name on his phone so Armstrong didn’t know who he was speaking to.

Strickland added that he had also deleted previous messages, so his girlfriend was unable to find them, despite her suspicions.
