A doctor has revealed the surprising reason why you should never mix berries with dairy milk or yogurt in your smoothies.Â
Dr. Charles Puza, a dermatologist practicing in New York City, has more than 1.4 million followers on TikTok, where he shares health and beauty tips that are backed by science.Â
He recently stitched a video of content creator Dana Bobyn making a high-protein smoothie with banana, blueberries, almond butter, Greek yogurt, protein powder, and spinach.Â
Dr. Puza noted that he loves smoothies before pointing out the one ingredient she should have skipped if she wanted to get the full health benefits of the berries.Â

Dr. Puza pointed out the one ingredient she should have skipped if she wanted to get the full health benefits of the berries
‘No offense to this creator because I feel no one really teaches this,’ he said.Â
‘But if you mix dairy products with antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries — the stuff you want to supercharge your smoothies with — you actually cancel out the absorption of the antioxidants.’
‘It’s true,’ he added, saying he would share the study in the comments.Â
The study Dr. Puza referenced found that eating blueberries with milk reduces the absorption of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant.Â
Antioxidants are chemicals that neutralize the activity of harmful free radicals, which are linked to illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.Â

Berries, vegetables, beans, and teas are known for being rich in antioxidants, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should stop having them with dairy products.Â
Although research has shown that milk decreases antioxidant capacity to a certain extent, there is not enough evidence that consuming dairy with high-antioxidant foods and drinks affects the health benefits, according to Healthline.
Dr. Puza’s video has been viewed nearly 30,000 times and has received mixed reviews from commenters.Â

‘This is the information I need. Good to know!’ one person responded.Â
‘WHAT,’ someone else added. ‘Been doing it wrong.’
‘I also recently saw an article saying to NEVER mix bananas with berries. Something about breaking down the polyphenols,’ another added.Â
Others shared that they didn’t find the study compelling enough to stop mixing dairy with berries.Â
‘This was one study of 11 people. Is there other data you’re citing or is this the only study? Genuinely asking,’ one user asked.Â
‘The creator wasn’t making an antioxidant smoothie, she was making a protein smoothie. Blueberries and dairy are delicious and are a great pairing,’ someone else argued.Â
