Maya Wiley Biography

Maya Wiley is an American civil rights activist and former board chair of the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board. Currently, Wiley is the vice president for social justice at New School and the Henry Cohen Professor of Urban Policy and Management. She is also the Legal Analyst for MSNBC.

Maya went to school at Colombia University and graduated with a Juris Doctorate. While there, she served as the executive editor of the Colombia human rights law review and the president of the black law student association. In addition, She volunteered at the AIDS Discrimination Law Clinic.

Moreover, Maya was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar; the recipient of the Jane Marks Murphy Prize in clinical advocacy. She was a Paul Robeson Fellow and Charles Evan Hughes Fellow. Maya also joined Dartmouth University and earned her degree in psychology.

Maya has previously worked in the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Afterward, she worked in the American Civil Liberties Union, as well as the Open Society Institue. Wiley founded and served as the president of the Center for Social Inclusion. It is a national policy strategy organization that aims to reduce structural racism.

Additionally, Wiley is the Vice President for Social Justice at The New School. She was appointed the Henry Cohen Professor of Public and Urban Policy at The New School’s Milano School of Policy, Management and Environment.
