A HOA resident’s flagpole has created controversy within her community.

Heather Heuman is a standout member of her community near Columbia, South Carolina, but something as simple as a flagpole has stirred up trouble.

“Actively involved in the Wildewood women’s club and actively involved just here specifically in my Wildewood community,” Heuman said to local Fox affiliate WACH.

She erected her flagpole on her property early in 2023, but concerns arose after Heuman joined the WildeWood V HOA.

“I joined the HOA and was on board and it kind of came up in the spring that someone was saying that they didn’t think our flagpole was in compliance,” Heuman said.

Heuman claimed the board suggested she go out and get approval for her flagpole, which she did in July.

“I got a response back in writing saying I had complete approval from the HOA,” she said.

However, Heuman claims that the HOA went back on their word in September.

“If the flagpole remains in its current place past the above right to cure period, the HOA will follow this letter with an official notice in the mail that includes a $25 per day fine as stated in the fines policy.”

The HOA’s bylaws have no restrictions against flagpoles as long as they are displayed respectfully, but the rules change between permanent and temporary flagpoles.

Heuman claimed that some of her neighbors want her to be a good neighbor and take the flagpole down.

“Hey, why don’t you be neighborly and take this down because there are some people who don’t like it,” Heuman recounted.

She said she won’t take the flagpole down out of respect for those in her family who have served in the military.

“We got a long legacy in our family of people who have fought,” Heuman said.

“The military means a lot to us, and being in America and having the freedom.”

The U.S. Sun has reached out to the WildeWood V board for comment.
