THE Five Eyes (FVEY) is an intelligence-sharing alliance among five English-speaking countries.
Dating back to the Cold War, the network comprises the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
What is the Five Eyes intelligence alliance?
Often revered as the oldest and most successful intelligence alliance in history, the Five Eyes is a multilateral treaty agreed upon by the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to collaborate on intelligence-gathering operations.
The nations involved in the network work together to collect, analyze, and share information that can help them in relation to national security and combating terrorism.
According to the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, Five Eyes “exchange views on subjects of mutual interest and concern; compare best practices in review and oversight methodology; explore areas where cooperation on reviews and the sharing of results is permitted where appropriate; encourage transparency to the largest extent possible to enhance public trust; and maintain contact with political offices, oversight and review committees, and countries as appropriate.”
Five Eyes has since expanded to include other nations in the pact, forming both Nine Eyes and Fourteen Eyes.
Nine Eyes includes the core members, plus Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Norway.
Meanwhile, Fourteen Eyes is comprised of the previous nine nations, with the inclusion of Germany, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, and Spain.

Fourteen Eyes members would also occasionally partner with countries like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Israel.
When did the Five Eyes form?
Five Eyes originated from an intelligence pact between the US and the UK in 1946.
Originally called the UKUSA Agreement, the two countries banded together to intercept, decode, and share foreign communication signals.
Considering how Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are UK dominions, they also eventually became members.
In 1955, the agreement was updated to mention that “this time only Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will be regarded as UKUSA-collaborating Commonwealth countries.”
When will the Five Eyes be on 60 Minutes?
Intelligence chiefs from the Five Eyes will be on 60 Minutes on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at 7:00 pm ET on CBS.
It will be the first time that representatives from all five nations will appear in an interview together.
According to the network, host Scott Pelley will have an in-depth discussion with these leaders about “whether the Israel-Hamas war has raised the terror threat at home in the United States and around the globe” and “China’s theft of technology.”
