A WOMAN has returned from vacation to find that her longtime family property was mistakenly torn down.

Susan Hodgson said after she returned to Atlanta from vacation last month she found the vacant home she owned on the city’s southwest side had been reduced to rubble.

“I am furious,” she said.

“I keep waking up thinking, ‘Is this all a joke or something?’ I’m just in shock,” she told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Hodgson said while she was out of town she got a call from a neighbor asking if she had hired someone to demolish the property.

“I said ‘no’ and she said, ‘Well, there’s someone over here who just demolished the whole house and tore it all down,’” she said.

When the neighbor confronted the workers from You Call It We Haul It, an Atlanta-based hauling, demolition, and grading company, Hodgson said they got aggressive: “He told her to shut up and mind her own business.”

So, she had a family member go over to see what was going. Hodgson said when they asked to see a permit it was then that the person in charge at the site checked his permit and realized they were at the wrong address.

The crew then packed up their equipment and left the property, leaving the house destroyed.

Hodgson said: “It’s just a grumbled mess. The whole house is tumbled in and a big ole mess. He didn’t haul nothing off.”

She said she’s also worried about any possible damage that may have been done to water or gas lines.

And even though the property had been vacant for about 15 years, Hodgson insists she made sure the home was well maintained.

“We keep it boarded, covered, grass cut, and the yard is clean,” she said. “The taxes are paid and everything is up on it.”

Hodgson said she’s filed a report with police and spoken to lawyers about the situation but things are still in limbo.

“We’re still in this process of figuring out what to do,” she said. “We keep pressing in different directions to see if something is going to happen.”

To this day, she said she has still not been contacted by anyone from You Call It We Haul It.

“It’s just hard to believe someone thinks they have the right to just come and tear something up and walk away from it and didn’t come back and say ‘I’m sorry. What do I need to do to fix this? It was an accident.’ They didn’t give me nothing,” Hodgson said.

In a statement to Fox affiliate WAGA-TV, You Call It We Haul It said it is investigating and working to resolve the mishap.

The U.S. Sun reached out to the company for comment on Monday but calls were sent straight to a voicemail box which was full.
