Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – John Gabe Gaddy, II, 58, was arrested last night and charged with DUI, driving without a valid license, and refusing to submit to a breath test after license suspension after allegedly driving over 100 mph on U.S. Hwy 441, just north of SR 121.

An Alachua Police Department officer pulled Gaddy over at about 6 p.m. last night on U.S. Hwy 441 for driving over 100 mph in a 60 mph zone and “aggressively weaving through traffic.” The officer wrote that Gaddy had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and that he performed poorly on field sobriety exercises. Gaddy reportedly refused to take a breath test.

Gaddy was previously arrested on July 6, 2023, for driving 80 mph in a 60 mph zone and was charged with DUI and a second offense of driving without a valid license. He entered a plea of nolo contendere to the charge of driving without a valid license and was sentenced to 20 days in jail, with credit for 20 days served, and a year of probation. The vehicle he was driving was impounded by a judge, but the judge later withdrew the order after Gaddy sent a letter stating that the vehicle was not his and that he would “not have access to the vehicle.”

The vehicle listed in the October 22 citations is the same vehicle listed in the July 6 citation.

Gaddy has eight felony convictions (three violent) and seven misdemeanor convictions (three violent). He has served four state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2014. Judge Thomas Jaworski set bail at $160,000, with the requirement that Gaddy be fitted with a transdermal alcohol monitor upon release.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
