A LAWYER has revealed that Walmart workers can ask shoppers to show their receipts if they suspect customers are stealing goods.

The legal expert said the request comes under what’s known as “shopkeeper’s privilege.”

But, top attorney Aaron Marks (@247law.com) warned that staffers must not overstep the mark.

In a TikTok clip, he explained that workers have the right to quiz suspected shoplifters if they believe they’re stealing goods.

Workers cannot use force as a means of detaining suspected shoplifters.

Marks said: “Can they jump on you and knock you down? No, they can’t.”

He explained that workers can ask shoppers questions and use tactics that make customers feel as if they are required to answer.

The legal expert revealed that customers may find it “annoying” when being asked to show evidence of their receipt, but Walmart has a right.

In another video, he said that shoppers have the right to refuse to comply with the request.

Marks is not the only lawyer that has referred to shoplifters privilege.

Walmart doesn’t have an official policy of making shoppers show their receipts but shoppers have told how they’ve endured such experiences in-store.

The issue of checking receipts has caused division among shoppers.

But, Costco workers check the receipts of customers when they leave the store.

The policy is thought to be a standard practice at the wholesaler, per its website.

The retailer has said: “We do this to double-check that the items purchased have been correctly processed by our cashiers.

“It’s our most effective method of maintaining accuracy in inventory control, and it’s also a good way to ensure that our members have been charged properly for their purchases.”

The U.S. Sun has approached Walmart for comment.
