Jewish councilwoman calls for Cooper Union president to QUIT

The Jewish NYC councilwoman who was arrested for wearing a gun on her waist while opposing a pro-Palestinian rally, has called for ‘HEADS TO ROLL’ at Cooper Union after an incident which saw Jewish students barricaded in the library during a protest.

Inna Vernikov, a Republican who represents a large number of Orthodox Jewish constituents in the city’s 48th district, took aim at Cooper Union Thursday morning after a frightening incident unfolded at the private institution on Wednesday.

A group of Jewish students were forced to flee a baying mob, who chased them after they had reportedly been counter-protesting. The pro-Israel students were forced to lock themselves in the library as pro-Palestinian protestors banged mercilessly on the doors.

No arrests were made and no one was injured on Wednesday night. The Jewish students were eventually able to walk out of the building.

Vernikov wrote in a lengthy X thread that the protest was supposed to have been held outside the school on public property. But the pro-Palestinian group was not stopped when they entered one of the school’s buildings.

She pointed out that this protest, which led to the direct terrorization of Jewish students, was sanctioned by faculty at the school, who ‘cancelled class for the walkout’ and ‘encouraged students to participate.’

Some, she said, even offered extra credit to those who attended the out-of-control rally. Others participated in the protest themselves.

As of Thursday morning, the small school, which grants degrees in engineering, art, and architecture, had not issued a statement assuring its Jewish students that would be safe to return to campus.

Later Thursday afternoon, a lawyer representing the school’s Jewish students made a statement in support of those who were chased into the library – only to be shouted down by a pro-Palestinian student who called his account of events ‘fake news’ as other onlookers reacted with boos and jeers.

‘These students are AFRAID to come to school today and many of them will STAY HOME,’ wrote Vernikov on X leading up to the lawyer’s presser.

Some students, she said, ‘have dropped classes.’ The students who became trapped in the library, ‘are traumatized, and said they “will never walk in there feeling alright again.”‘

‘This is a terrible DERELICTION OF DUTY on behalf of Cooper Union to protest its Jewish students from physical harm, a failure to provide them with a safe space, and the university must be held accountable for creating a HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT,’ wrote the livid representative. ‘HEADS NEED TO ROLL.’

A statement from the school in the aftermath of the event said that ‘The Library was closed for approximately 20 minutes while student protestors moved through our building.’

The New York Police Department said community affairs officers were present throughout the demonstration, which about 90 people attended.

‘The school staff allowed the demonstration to take place. The students dispersed after the incident. No property damage was reported, no criminal reports were filed and no threats of physical violence were made,’ said the department in a statement.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who has positioned himself during this conflict as staunchly pro-Israel, said that his office had ‘been in contact with the NYPD and Cooper Union leadership about the situation that unfolded on campus.;

He said the NYPD was present at the scene and coordinated with school security throughout the event, ‘ensuring no one was injured.’

Vernikov, herself a Jew, expressed outrage at the school on behalf of its Jewish students. She has been speaking out consistently against antisemitism since the Hamas terror attacks on October 7.

Shortly after the attacks, she was arrested for sporting a gun on her waist while opposing a pro-Palestine rally at CUNY’s Brooklyn College.

She turned herself in to the NYPD after her appearance at the school’s Flatbush campus, where hundreds gathered to support the Palestinian cause after Hamas terrorists killed 1,400 Israelis.

Vernikov, 39, was released with a desk appearance ticket and ordered to surrender her gun, a Smith & Wesson 9 millimeter, as well as her concealed carry license, which she just obtained last month.

While she had a license, it is a Class E felony to bring a gun to a protest or school grounds, which are deemed ‘sensitive locations.’

‘I’m here at the pro-Hamas rally in Brooklyn college. There is a ton of police and we made sure the Jewish students feel safe today, but here they are screaming and yelling “Intifada, globalize the Intifida!”‘ Vernikov said on a video from the protest posted on X.

‘If you are here today standing with these people you are nothing short of a terrorist without the bombs,’ she added.

Vernikov represents Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay and nearby neighborhoods, and sits on the Council’s Standards and Ethics Committee.

The CUNY4Palestine X account shared images of the councilwoman and her gun, writing: ‘At today’s rally on Brooklyn College campus led by the students in their SJP chapter, Inna Vernikov showed up showcasing a gun to Palestinian students and their allies.

‘These are the tactics of force and intimidation used by zionist groups to silence any support for Palestine.’
