AN AVID Costco shopper has run into a sticky situation when trying to buy just a salad from the bulk grocery store.
After checking out at the store, the receipt said the total had come out to more than double of what the item she bought actually cost, leaving her in shock.
The salad purchased was priced at $12.70 but the total came out to $27.72 at Costco.
TikTok creator Ana Paula Ficher (@annapaulaficher) shared her story in a video on the platform and warned people to check their receipts before leaving the store.
“This is a friendly reminder to always check your Costco receipts,” Ficher said.
“Normally I stand in line because I always have a ton of stuff.
“Today miraculously I went there for one thing, the quinoa salad. I really like their quinoa salad which was $12.70.”
Ficher noted that she usually does not go to self-checkout but did this time because she was only buying one item.
“So, I decided instead of standing in line for one item I’m actually going to try the self-checkout which I don’t believe in and never do,” she said.
“But I’m like I don’t feel like standing in this line.
“So, I scan my item, hit pay, and I get my receipt and I look, and I go $27.72 what the heck?
“The salad was only $12.70; how does it jump that high? I mean I know we have taxes but even still right I’m like that’s not even possible.”

Ficher was immediately shocked and asked an employee to help her figure out what had happened.
MYSTERIOUS WATERMELON
That is when they discovered something odd on her receipt.
“I call someone over and say can you tell me why my salad went from this to this,” she said.
“They look at my receipt and say, ‘Um, did you get a watermelon?’”
The woman was slightly offended because she clearly did not buy a watermelon.
She and the worker both ended up agreeing that the whole situation seemed odd.
“Unless you see an invisible watermelon somewhere. Uh no there’s no watermelon. I scanned one item. As you can see, I have one item.
“Well, that’s really weird,” she reenacted.
WARNING
The incident led Ficher to warn everyone that they should make sure to check their receipt especially when buying multiple items.
“Now, here’s the thing, normally I have a lot of items, let’s say for example I have 10-12 items and I’m scanning all of them and I go pay.
“You’re not really going to notice, because you have quite a few items and nowadays things get quite expensive.
“If it wasn’t for me just having one item and knowing how much it was, I probably would have never noticed that.
“I just wanted to share that message with you, always always check your receipt,” she doubled down.
