He was born on June 22, 1994, in Hibbing, Minnesota, a mining city in the north of the US.

Following high school, he continued his ice hockey career by playing for the junior teams of the Indiana Ice and Sioux City Musketeers. Later, he attended college and joined the National Collegiate Hockey League as a player for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

Johnson made an impression while playing with the Bulldogs, finishing second on the team in goals and points with an amazing 18 goals and 37 points in 42 games.

He scored a spectacular power-play goal in overtime to secure the Bulldogs’ victory over Boston University and advance them to the Frozen Four, the pinnacle of men’s college hockey.

Due to his achievements, he was invited to the NHL team Pittsburgh Penguins’ prospect development camp, where he excelled enough to secure a two-year, entry-level contract in 2017.

Johnson made the decision to relocate to Sweden in 2020 and play with the Malmo Redhawks before coming back to North America to play for the Ontario Reign of Canada.

But the forward’s career in Europe was far from over; in 2022, he moved once more, this time to play for the German DHL team Augsburger Panther. In 2023–24, he signed a contract to play with the Nottingham Panthers.

For the 2023–2024 season, Johnson joined the Panthers.

In addition to playing 13 games for the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins, he has participated in four of the top leagues in the globe.

He played for the Pennsylvania-based team for a total of three years, scoring 139 points in both league and postseason play.

Due to his impressive play, he was called up to Pittsburgh, where he scored four goals in 13 games over the course of two years, including the game-winning goal in the Penguins’ 7-4 victory over the Minnesota Wild in October 2019.
