A 77-year-old man in Ohio was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly beat a woman confined to a wheelchair, flinging her to the floor, repeatedly kicking her in the ribs, and then strangling her using a pool noodle. Carl Edward Chastang was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of felonious assault resulting in the victim being seriously harmed, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a report from Columbus, Ohio, NBC affiliate WCMH, officers with the Columbus Police Department on Saturday, Oct. 28 responded to a call at the Mount Carmel East Hospital in regards to an adult female believed to be the victim of a “domestic violence incident.” Upon arriving at the facility, police located the victim who allegedly explained that she had been assaulted by Chastang.

The nature of the relationship between the victim and Chastang was not immediately clear.

A copy of the criminal complaint obtained by the station provided additional details about the alleged attack.

Authorities say that the victim was in her wheelchair inside a home located in Franklin County’s Eastland neighborhood when she accidentally ran over Chastang’s foot. She reportedly said that Chastang became enraged, grabbing her wheelchair and flipping it over while the victim was still sitting in it, causing the victim to land on the floor.

While the victim was on the floor, Chastang allegedly pushed the chair away from the victim and then proceeded to pummel her, punching and kicking the victim multiple times. After allegedly beating the victim, Chastang reportedly grabbed a pool noodle — a long, thin floatation device made of pliable foam — which he wrapped around the victim’s neck, using it to strangle her.
