A mugshot of Jamere Miller

A Michigan man who sported a blonde wig to disguise his appearance while kidnapping and killing his girlfriend outside her job earlier this year has been sentenced in her murder.

Patrice Wilson, 29, was fatally shot on May 13 by Jamere Miller — the man her family said she was trying to break up with — as the nurse was leaving Detroit Receiving Hospital.

What was Jamere Miller sentenced to in Patrice Wilson’s murder?

Miller, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case, was sentenced Tuesday to 35 to 60 years in prison, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced. “You have obviously stolen the life of someone that was very, very precious to all who knew her,” Wayne County Judge Kevin Cox said during the 45-minute sentencing hearing, according to The Detroit News. “You have earned the right to be sentenced to the Department of Corrections for dozens of years.”

Miller struck a deal with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office last month, with his guilty plea to one count of second-degree murder leading to the dismissal of other charges including a count each of first-degree
murder, felony murder, carjacking, armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, and five counts of felony
firearm charges.

What did Jamere Miller say as he was sentenced for Patrice Wilson’s murder?

Miller said during the sentencing hearing, “It ain’t nothing I can do to take back none of it,” according to The Detroit News. “It shouldn’t have even happened.” He also wrote a statement that was read by his lawyer to the judge, in which he reportedly expressed that he often thinks about the morning he killed his ex-girlfriend and how Wilson tried to tell him how to stop her bleeding. “This has been the worst, most haunting experience of my life,” Miller wrote. “Patrice didn’t deserve this. We don’t deserve to lose both our lives over this. … I failed her. I failed us. I am so ashamed.”

On May 13 at around 7:53 a.m., Miller disguised himself with a wig, hat and glasses and waited outside Detroit Receiving Hospital until Wilson got into her car after her shift there, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Detroit police described the wig as being blonde or red at the time of Miller’s arrest in May.

“He went to the back passenger side of her car and fired a handgun multiple times, fatally wounding her,” the prosecutor’s office stated Tuesday. “Miller then got into the driver’s seat and fled from the scene.”

The Detroit Police Department’s investigation led them to uncover evidence in Inkster, Garden City and
Novi, all suburbs of Detroit. On May 13, at 2:19 p.m., police were told that Wilson’s car was found in Novi. The woman’s body was located “in the rear of the car.”

Miller turned himself in to cops on May 14.

In May, Wilson’s mother Rosalyn Livingston told Detroit station WXYZ that Miller was her daughter’s ex-boyfriend. “The more she pulled away… he was sending flowers,” Livingston told the station at the time. “If you go by her house, there are things at her door that she kind of like left there to let him know, ‘I am not accepting things from you.'”

During Miller’s sentencing hearing Tuesday, the courtroom was filled with family and friends of both the suspect and victim, some of who cried during the proceedings, The Detroit News reported.

“What kind of person are you to do this to her?,” Wilson’s grandmother reportedly asked Miller in court. “How can you love a person when you took her life?”

The victim’s uncle, Jeff Moore, said the loss of his niece left an “irreplaceable void in our lives.”
