A murder trial date has been set for the ex-gang leader accused in the fatal 1996 drive-by shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who pleaded not guilty to the murder last week, appeared in court on Tuesday in shackles to learn when he’d stand trial, according to the Associated Press.

When does the trial begin for Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the man accused in Tupac Shakur’s murder?

A judge set a trial date for June 3, 2024 for Davis, who is currently in jail in Las Vegas.

Who is Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the man charged with killing rapper Tupac Shakur?

Davis was arrested on September 29 outside of a home in Las Vegas, the same residence where a search warrant was served on July 17. The Associated Press reported in September that it was Davis’ wife’s home. Davis, who’s 60 and from Compton, California, is the only living person who was in the car from which the shots were fired from, according to the AP.

Davis wrote in a 2019 memoir, and has also said publicly, that he was the mastermind behind the shooting that killed Shakur and also wounded Marion “Suge” Knight, one of the founders of Death Row Records.

The book detailed his life leading a Compton faction of the Crips gang. In the memoir, Davis claimed he was given immunity from prosecution in 2010 after giving Los Angeles cops details of Shakur’s killing, as well as of the L.A. murder of rapper Christopher Wallace, who was also known as The Notorious B.I.G and Biggie Smalls.

Prosecutors have said that Shakur’s killing was related East Coast and West Coast “gangsta rap” clashes at the time. They told a grand jury that before he was killed, the rapper was involved in a fight at a casino on the Las Vegas Strip with Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.

Anderson, who was 22 at the time of Shakur’s shooting, was in Davis’ vehicle when shots were fired, but he said he wasn’t involved in the killing. Anderson was fatally shot two years later in Compton.

Skakur — famous for songs like “Changes” and “Dear Mama” and roles in films including Juice and Poetic Justice — has had five No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 record chart, with three of those being released after his death. He was 25 when he was killed.

Davis has said he’s been diagnosed with cancer. His lawyers, Charles Cano and Robert Arroyo, say they plan to file documents asking that their client be released on bail before the murder trial, the AP reported.
