Trump, Biden campaigns go to war over gaffes and stumbles

The 2024 race is shaping up to be a slog over slurs and stumbles, if it ends up pitting 80-year-old President Joe Biden against 77-year-old former President Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner.

On Monday, Trump’s campaign spokesman lashed out at Biden, calling attention to his senior moments after The Messenger highlighted the Biden campaign’s plan to showcase a ‘confused’ and ‘slurring’ Trump.

In recent weeks, the @BidenHQ rapid response account on X mocked Trump for verbal slip-ups including confusing Biden with President Barack Obama, mistaking Sioux Falls for Sioux City and and mispronouncing words, like saying ‘tacksicks‘ for tactics.

In one post, the account run by the Biden campaign asked ‘Is Donald Trump okay?’ and featured a highlights reel of gaffes and odd moments.

‘The Biden campaign must be confused like their own candidate because Biden is in a constant state of confusion, shuffling around like a Roomba, and falling on his a** in front of the American people because he’s weak and frail,’ Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement to DailyMail.com Monday morning, slapping back.

The Trump campaign has, for months, made fun of Biden’s physical stumbles, with Trump doing a bit at his campaign rallies where he pretends to be the president getting lost getting offstage.

‘But even more damning is that Biden is just plain stupid,’ Cheung’s assault continued. ‘He doesn’t have the intelligence to lead a junior high book club let alone the entire country.’

Polling has shown that voters are harder on Biden about his age than Trump, who’s just three and a half years the Democrat’s junior.

The recent disastrous New York Times/Siena poll found that 71 percent of voters across six battleground states think Biden is too old to be president, while 39 percent said the same thing of Trump.

The Associated-Press NORC poll from last August showed a similar disparity, though the numbers were higher for both candidates – with 77 percent saying that of Biden and 51 percent – a majority – saying that of Trump.

Biden’s campaign is hoping to narrow that gap by highlighting Trump’s screw-ups too.

‘What the Biden campaign is amplifying is simply examples of Donald Trump’s erratic and dangerous behavior,’ a Biden campaign official told The Messenger. ‘What we’ve seen pretty consistently is an imbalance of coverage when it comes to these things … What we’re doing is filling the void for a press corps that doesn’t seem interested in covering both Donald Trump and Joe Biden the same.’

A late-October report from the left-leaning Media Matters found that among the cable news networks only the liberal MSNBC had covered four recent Trump gaffes and still only dedicated 35 minutes to the subject.

Trump had confused the leaders of Turkey and Hungary, called Biden ‘Obama,’ mixed up former President George W. Bush with his brother Jeb, the former Florida governor – suggesting it was Jeb, a 2016 Republican primary rival, who got the country into the Iraq War.

The gaffe that received the most cable news airtime was Trump saying he would keep the country out of ‘World War II,’ a conflict that wrapped up 78 years ago.

Former Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill noted on MSNBC that Trump was a ‘gaffe machine of incompetence’ and Democrats needed to highlight that.

She said she had spoken to Biden’s team about ‘punching Trump in the nose about his inability to lead and his incompetence.’

‘I do think it’s time for them to quit thinking everyone’s gonna go, “Oh, gosh, Biden’s gotten a lot done,’ McCaskill said. ‘And start focusing on the binary choice between somebody who would be a danger to our democracy and the world and somebody who’s going to surround himself with strong, competent people and run a competent government.’
