Florida: Mother Accidentally Shoots Her Son In His Leg
Per the Pembroke Pines Police Department in Pembroke Pines, Florida, a boy was shot in the leg by mistake by his mother, who believed the boy to be an intruder, and was taken to a hospital.
According to a statement from the police, they responded to a report of gunfire inside a house close to Northwest 134 Avenue and Northwest 9th Street on Sunday at around 1:43 a.m.
The unidentified mother and son were inside when the officers came.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department released a statement saying, “[She] had fallen asleep on her living room couch while her son had fallen asleep upstairs in his room earlier in the evening.” The department also stated that their residence is occupied by the two of them alone.
According to authorities, the mother was asleep on the couch in her living room when she was startled awake by a disturbance in her kitchen. According to the police report, the woman “removed a firearm that she had concealed in her purse next to her in the living room” because she thought it was an intruder.
Her son was in the kitchen when she proceeded to investigate the source of the noise. Then, according to the police, the two were “startled by each other’s presence.”
According to the authorities, “the mother accidentally fired her gun twice, striking the floor once and her son in the leg.”
The boy was brought to a nearby hospital after the incident to receive treatment for non-life-threatening wounds.
Although the incident is being looked into by the police, they stated that as of right now, “does not appear to be any criminal intent” in the case. For the investigation, the Department of Children and Families was also consulted.
