ACCUSED Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann signed over sole ownership of his dilapidated Long Island home to his estranged wife for $0 just weeks before she reportedly began filming with a TV documentary crew.

Heuermann, 60, filed a transfer deed on September 22 naming his partner of more than two decades, Asa Ellerup, also 60, as the sole owner of the couple’s home in Massapequa Park, documents exclusively obtained by The U.S. Sun show.

The home was purchased by Heuermann from his parents in 1994 for $170,000. It was most recently valued at around $530,000 as of 2023, property records show.

The paperwork was finalized on October 5 and is subject to $495 in administration fees. It’s unclear who paid those fees.

Ellerup filed for divorce from Heuermann in July, roughly a week after he was arrested and charged with the murders of at least three women found dead along Gilgo Beach in 2010.

Heuermann is not contesting the terms of the divorce, which remain under seal.

At the time of the filing, Ellerup’s attorney said the move was made as a precautionary measure to shield her from future liability if the families of Heuermann’s alleged victims decided to sue.

She has routinely declined to discuss the accusations against her husband but told The U.S. Sun in September she was completely shocked and disorientated by the news of his arrest.

Last week, she visited Heuermann behind bars for the first time since his incarceration. The couple spent an hour together, her attorney Robert Macedonio confirmed, but what they discussed is not known.

A large TV crew has been spotted with Ellerup at the home over the last week. Multiple sources told News 12 Long Island that she is currently working with an unnamed major streaming service on a documentary about the case.

Speaking outside of the home over the weekend, Macedonio confirmed Ellerup will attend Heuermann’s trial to judge the evidence for herself.

“She wants to hear and see how it is played out in court. Not what the media has put out. Not what the podcast people are saying,” he told the Daily Mail in part.

“She wants to see and hear for herself what evidence they have that he did this.”

He added she has no plans to visit him in jail again and her life will be put on hold until his fate is determined.

Asa Ellerup has not been accused of any wrongdoing by police.

Strands of her hair were found on three of the bodies, helping to lead investigators to Heuermann, per police documents. She is believed to have been out of town when the Gilgo Beach murders occurred.

For 12 days, the home she now legally owns and shares with her two adult children was the subject of an extensive police search as investigators excavated the backyard and hauled truck-loads of evidence from the property.

What they found remains unclear, save for a cache of more than 900 guns that were reportedly stored in a locked room in the basement.

Suffolk County cops said at the time that they were investigating whether some of the murders may have taken place inside the home.

At the search’s conclusion, Ellerup was the recipient of a more than $50,000 GoFundMe drive organized by Melissa Moore, the daughter of the Happy Face Killer.

The fundraiser was established shortly after Ellerup and her attorney held a press conference, revealing she was battling two types of cancer, was soon to lose her health insurance, and that her home had been ransacked and partially destroyed by investigators, rendering it “unlivable”.

But John Ray, an attorney for the family of another woman found dead on Long Island that led to the discovery of Heuermann’s alleged victims, has publicly called for Ellerup to be investigated alongside her husband, questioning her claims of innocence.

In a press conference last month, Ray claimed to have unearthed new evidence suggesting Ellerup was aware of Heuermann’s frequent solicitation of sex workers and even allegedly partook in some of his sexual exploits herself.

One witness, according to Ray, said she had serviced Heuermann upwards of 20 times. The unnamed witness claimed sex workers would sometimes arrive at the couple’s small home two at a time while Ellerup was upstairs.

Another witness claimed to have attended a sex party at the Heuermanns in the mid-1990s.

Ray said the new apparent evidence suggests that Ellerup may know more than what she’s letting on.

In an interview with The U.S. Sun last week, when news of her jail visit with Heuermann broke, Ray claimed it was further evidence of their “illicit cooperation.”

“It’s evidence of their unified interest, because they’ve been unified in everything that has occurred, and she’s not going there because there’s a conflict of any kind, and I can prove that,” said Ray.

Referencing the deed transfer, Ray accused Ellerup and Heuermann of concocting a “scam” to defraud creditors – including families of the victims who may later file lawsuits – to benefit Ellerup financially.

“It’s a scam up their ears, and they know it,” Ray alleged.

“That’s a presumptive fraud of creditors of Rex Heuermann. So, they conspired together for that to happen. And it’s of course during the matrimonial, so there’ll be a pretend claim that it’s a settlement of the matrimonial asset issues, but it’s actually a fraud on creditors, and she’s engaging voluntarily in that.

“She’s not the person at all that is portrayed as someone who is abused and broken – that’s just not the case,” he further claimed.

“So was it a surprise? No, it’s no surprise at all that she’s going to visit him at the jail to talk to him about God knows what else. She hadn’t been visiting him at all, but now she does after she’s been given the house.

“The press conference, I think, is also quite likely relevant, where the timing of this visit is concerned.

“It could very well be that they’re trying to put their stories together and get their stories straight, but it becomes an interesting question whether or not they’ll still enjoy husband and wife privilege as to anything they say at the jail, given there’s a divorce pending.

“It doesn’t nullify what they’ve exchanged as husband and wife before the divorce begins, he still gets to enjoy the protections of spousal privilege, but once that divorce starts, I’m not so sure.”

THE LONG ISLAND SERIAL KILLER

Ellerup had previously spoken with Heuermann on the phone, roughly a week after he was detained, Macedonio confirmed at the time.

Macedonio also confirmed Ellerup’s jail visit on November 8 during a brief phone call but issued a blanket “no comment” to any further questions about the reason for the visit.

When asked directly about Ray’s claims, Macedonio added: “I’m not going to justify anything John Ray has to say with a comment.”

A spokesperson for the jail had earlier confirmed that Heuermann was visited on Nov. 8 but declined to state if Ellerup was the visitor.

“Rex Heuermann is allowed the same visitations that all other inmates are entitled to,” the spokesperson added.

“Visits are one hour and visitors are allowed to embrace once at the beginning and end of the visit. All inmates are searched after visits.”

Heuermann has been held without bond since he was arrested almost four months ago for the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Lynn Costello in 2010.

He remains the prime suspect in the murder of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, with additional charges believed to be forthcoming soon.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Known collectively as the Gilgo Four, each of the women were petite sex workers in their 20s who advertised their services on Craigslist.

Their bodies were found bound with tape or belts, wrapped in camouflage burlap, and discarded along a desolate beachfront parkway.

The horrific succession of discoveries was made during a search for Shannan Gilbert, another sex worker who vanished in May 2010.

Another six bodies would be found in the area by the close of 2011, including Gilbert’s, whose remains were discovered in December 2011.

Police ruled her death accidental and have long contested her case is in any way connected to the Gilgo Four.

However, John Ray has long countered that an independent autopsy showed that Gilbert was likely strangled to death and is therefore a victim of murder.

BLAME GAME

During his press conference last month, Ray shared two new sworn witness statements potentially linking Heuermann to Gilbert for the first time, in addition to another suspected Long Island Serial Killer (LISK) victim, Karen Vergata.

One of the witnesses, who was working as a cab driver at the time, claimed to have shared a disturbing encounter with Heuermann at a motel she was called to by her dispatcher.

She told Ray she saw Heuermann in the parking lot, and moments later, a woman came out of a room crying.

The cab driver identified the woman as Gilbert, who she then drove to a local train station.

The second witness told him that she had previously encountered Heuermann at a sex club called La Trapeze in Midtown Manhattan, not far from where he worked, in February 1996.

In the witness’s sworn statement, she said Heuermann had posted a flyer on the wall of the club, advertising sexual encounters at his Massapequa Park home.

She and her boyfriend, an NYPD detective, went out to the home with a woman she believes to be Vergata, and inside she allegedly met Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup.

“Karen went downstairs,” the witness wrote. “I stayed upstairs. My partner, who I believe was bisexual, kept disappearing. I believed he was elsewhere in the house, having sex with Rex. I believe I had sex with Rex as well. I never went downstairs.”

The witness claimed to have offered to perform a sex act on Ellerup, but she declined.

The witness said when she and her cop boyfriend – named only as “RW” – left the Heuermann’s home, “The woman I believe to be Karen suddenly ran outside, naked, and ran about by the garage. RW had gone to the back of the house to look for his belt, but he was then back in the car,” she wrote.

“RW told me not to worry about her, that she was OK, they were only playing a game. We left without her. I felt uneasy that we left without the woman.”

In an interview last month, Ray said he doesn’t see how it’s possible to “ignore or refuse to investigate” Ellerup in light of the purported evidence he’s uncovered.

“She’s certainly in the mix from the evidence we have, certainly as to allowing sex workers to serve her husband in her house while she’s there. And this goes on as a serial event over the course of years,” he claimed.

“Then, in that tiny little house, how can sex workers make their way into the basement to be with Rex and the wife not noticing them?

“There’s no way you can go that you wouldn’t notice it […] And it’s not like one person showed up once and this was an isolated event. [Rex] had a serial 27 years of spending a fortune on prostitution in his home.

“And so, of course, she’s got to be in the mix. She’s got to be a suspect – if she’s not, something’s wrong with the investigation.”

Ray doubled down on those claims on Thursday, insisting it would be impossible for Ellerup not to be aware of her husband’s exploits if his sources’ claims are accurate.

“According to various sex workers who’ve come forward, he was having sex in the basement of that house with them repeatedly, and in that teeny, weeny little house, she never knew that? It’s impossible to believe,” he alleged.

“And there’s another fact that emerged. There’s only one bathroom in that house […] so that would mean that if he’s having sex downstairs and now they want to do what girls do at work and clean up afterward, they have to go upstairs to the only bathroom, which means they’re up on the floor where she is on [and] would she not know that this was going on? It’s absurd.

“It makes you wonder who these people are in reality; they’re not this sad, broken, unaware family that has been left in shellshock.

“I believe they have to have known more than they’re letting on.”

PROBE CONTINUES

Suffolk County cops are now looking into possible links between Heuermann and Shannan Gilbert and Karen Vergata, following the new tips yielded by Ray.

Other police departments across the country are also currently combing through old cold case files to probe Heuermann for any potential connections to other unsolved murders.

The U.S. Sun was first to reveal last month that he is being investigated in connection with the murder of Carmen Vargas, another sex worker who was strangled and discarded at the side of a road in Freeport, New York, in 1989.

Heuermann, meanwhile, remains in custody in New York.

An investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders remains ongoing.
