A great white shark named Crystal was recently spotted gliding through the waters along Daytona Beach, as the species are making their way to Florida. 

The juvenile predator was observed by researchers from OCEARCH, a non-profit organization, in the morning of November 2 near St. Augustine, Florida.

As the temperatures drop in the northern regions, these magnificent creatures embark on their migration towards the southeast coast. 

More of these great sharks are anticipated to grace the warm currents off the Florida East Coast and reach the Gulf of Mexico eventually. 

The migration began around mid-October and will continue through early December, OCEARCH Senior Advisor for Science & Academics Dr. Bob Hueter told News 6.

As the temperatures drop in the northern regions, these magnificent creatures embark on their migration towards the southeast coast 

 ‘It’s kind of like winter snowbirds, the sharks start heading south in the fall as the temperatures drop up north,’ he said. ‘We have probably about a dozen species that are on the move right now.’ 

The great white, the ocean’s most feared predator, typically reaches lengths surpassing 21 feet and can weigh over 2,500 pounds. 

During the winter migration of sharks, great whites become frequent and noteworthy visitors in Florida waters. 

The striking beauty of Crystal earned her name from North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, where trackers were able to sample and tag her in 2022.

Researchers pinged Andromache off the coast of Marco Island Thursday, after they spotted her around the same time last year nearly in the same spot. 

Andromache the shark seems to be taking the lead in this journey, as researchers have sighted her at least six times over the past month navigating the waters around the Florida Keys. 

The current trajectory of the shark appears to mirror its route from November and December of the previous year.

‘The white sharks spend the summer up in these northern areas where they are feeding on high-energy food like seals and tunas. And they start making their break south around mid-October,’ Hueter said. 

‘By early December, they are typically off the southeast coast, off the Florida East Coast, and then a great number of them go all the way around the Keys and into the Gulf of Mexico.’

How far the creatures stay offshore depends on the age and sex of the individual shark, Hueter said. The distance could range from one to 100 miles. 

The team met Crystal for the first time on March 14 last year while drifting off of North Carolina. 

‘She hung out with us for a while, circling the ship a few times, before we were able to study her on the lift,’ scientists wrote.
