Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have been forced to delay the launch of their tech-infused The Golf League after the roof of their Florida venue collapsed.

Woods said: ‘I’ve been a believer in TGL, and as the momentum has built this past year, I’m even more excited about what this can become for fans of the game all around the world.

‘Although the events of last week will force us to make adjustments to our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great committed players.’

McIlroy added: ‘The postponement brings mixed feelings of disappointment and excitement. Above all, we are happy that no one was injured.

‘We are looking forward to the launch of TGL. Given the circumstances, while the delay is disappointing, the postponement will allow us to regroup, refocus and return stronger.’

The delay is a significant blow for McIlroy and Woods, who concocted the idea as part of the response to LIV Golf’s emergence.

An array of star players on the PGA Tour have signed up to compete in the team-based format but recently, Masters champion John Rahm pulled out because he was unable to offer the required time commitments.

It sparked speculation that Rahm was going to cross over to LIV. The Spaniard said in a statement: While I still think it’s a great opportunity, right now it would require a level of commitment I can’t offer.’

Major winners such as Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Keegan Bradley and Shane Lowry are all lined up to compete in TGL.

Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Atlanta have all got franchises representing those areas while Woods himself has founded the sixth team for Jupiter, Florida.
