The prime suspect, now charged in the disappearance of Karen Koep and her husband, had been forced to live in the couple’s rental property following a personal tragedy.
Timothy Burke 40, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of kidnapping on Friday as confirmed by Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
His arrest comes after Karen Koep and her husband Davido were declared missing on November 13, 2023, north of Seattle, Washington, after officers conducted a welfare check at their home.
When investigating their home, police labeled the scene as suspicious, and have since revealed that they had found evidence of an attack.
“Throughout the investigation, we have been in contact with the family of the missing couple, and sadly, we do not believe the couple survived the attack at their residence,” the sheriff’s department shared in a press release on Friday.
Pauline Dutton, Karen’s sister, revealed to local NBC news affiliate KING, that Burke was a disgruntled tenant of Karen and Davido.
Dutton said that cops told her Burke had taken a credit card belonging to the couple and “took out 80 bucks.”
“I hope it was worth it,” she told The Daily Beast.
“…We still don’t know what the motive was, but I know there was a lot of arguing over the years with tenants.”
It turns out, the Burke had been struggling financially since tragedy struck his own home four months prior.

In a GoFundMe started by Burke, he expressed that he had been living in a “shack,” when an arsonist burned it down.
In doing so, Burke lost all of his possessions including, “clothes, fridge, family items, computer, books, mementos, kitchen stuff, etc,” wrote the man.
“The guy who did it was a drunk, mentally ill, and believed in the weirdest stuff. I had not even been rude to him,” explained Burke in the GoFundMe description.
His goal was to reach $5,000 and with five donations he has collected $1,765.
After the fire, Burke found his way to being a tenant of Karen and Davidos, working for Davido in lieu of paying rent.
Dutton describes the house that Burke was living in as a “home with multiple people living in rooms there.”
“I really need help, I have a lot to offer the world but I need help to do so. Please help,” Burke had pled in his charity page.
Davido was the first person to donate to the GoFundMe that Burke set up to “get back on [his] feet,” giving $65 to the cause.
Since the arrest has been made, Karen’s sister promised that will all the people who loved Karen and Davido, “that courtroom will be full,” come Burke’s arraignment.
“I hate this man,” Dutton said.
“I hate him, but I do forgive him because I am a woman of God. [But] I only forgive him because of my faith. It’s not what I think he deserves, by any means.”
