JACKIE Kennedy, the wife of President John F. Kennedy, was wearing a pink Chanel suit when her husband was assassinated.
She insisted on wearing the suit, stained with his blood, during the swearing-in of the new president and for the flight back to Washington D.C., but where is the suit now?
What happened to Jackie Kennedy’s pink Chanel suit after the assassination of JFK?
It is believed that the day after the assassination Jackie finally agreed to remove the suit and take a bath, but she would not have it cleaned.
The striking raspberry pink ensemble – which Jackie had worn six times before the tragedy – is now locked away at the National archives.
It is held in a custom-made, acid-free box with temperature and humidity control.
Despite being kept there since 1964, the suit legally belonged to Jackie’s daughter Caroline Kennedy until 2003, when a deed of gift was secured from Caroline — though it came with some stipulations.
Caroline requested that the suit won’t be available for viewing until at least the year 2103, when, according to the National Archives, the Kennedy family will reconsider whether there will ever be public access of any kind.
Caroline’s request read: “The family further desires to ensure that the materials never be subject to public display, research, or any other use that would in any way dishonour the memory of Mrs. Kennedy or President Kennedy, or cause any grief or suffering to members of their family.”
Jackie’s other items including shoes, a handbag and stockings were reportedly “blood-covered and folded in a towel,” and according to The New York Times, are also preserved at the National Archives.

However her renowned white gloves and pink pillow box hat are still missing.
Author Philip Shenon, who wrote about the assassination, told CNN in 2013.”The hat apparently goes to the Secret Service initially and the Secret Service turns it over to Mrs. Kennedy’s private secretary, and then it disappears. It has not been seen since.”
What has Jackie Kennedy said about her husband’s assassination?
Jackie Kennedy has been widely praised for her strength in supporting the Nation while it grieved – despite later revealing she was “not in any condition to make much sense of anything.”
She told her story to writer Joe Alsop and said she was “so bitter” about the tragedy and tortured herself thinking what she could have done differently to prevent it.
She described her line of reasoning and said: “I could have pulled him down, and then the second shot would not have hit him.”
Jackie was stunned when other friends said they hoped she would marry again. “I consider that my life is over,” she informed them, “and I will spend the rest of my life waiting for it really to be over.”
Following her husbands death Jackie also commented on religion to Arthur Schlesinger – who did several interviews with her.
She said: “You don’t really start to think of those things until something terrible happens to you.”
When Jackie later reflected on testifying to the Warren Commission who were reviewing the circumstances of the assassination she shared that she “had the feeling of what did it matter what they found out?”
She added: “They could never bring back the person who was gone.”
