THE court announced on Friday morning that Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female justice to serve on the Supreme Court, had passed away.
O’Connor, 93, passed away as a result of “complications related to advanced dementia,” the court said.
She gained notoriety over time as a centrist conservative who frequently acted as the swing vote on contentious social matters.
“A daughter of the American Southwest, Sandra Day O’Connor blazed an historic trail as our Nation’s first female justice,” Chief Justice John Roberts said.
“We at the Supreme Court mourn the loss of a beloved colleague, a fiercely independent defender of the rule of law, and an eloquent advocate for civics education. And we celebrate her enduring legacy as a true public servant and patriot.”
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, wrote about the former justice: “It really is wild that it took 192 years for the US to let a woman serve on the Supreme Court. That woman, Sandra Day O’Connor just passed away at 93.”
