The first trailer for the final instalment of The Crown shows a glimpse into William and Kate’s romance including when he spotted her in the now infamous see-through dress at St Andrews and their first kiss.

Elsewhere in the trailer, then Prince Charles is shown as ‘unpopular’ and arguing with his heir, while the Queen is shown grieving over her sister Margaret’s death.

The part 2 trailer for season six of the show is 2 minutes 44 seconds in length and opens with Princes William and Harry in happier times, showing the two brothers – now thought to be estranged in real life – grinning together as they pose for a family photo.

The Peter Morgan drama, which will be released on Netflix on December 14, has courted controversy for its portrayal of the Windsor family.

The final season cover the early 2000s, with the family struggling with the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death, a growing republican movement and Charles’ tense relationship with William.

The late Queen Elizabeth II, played by Imelda Staunton, is seen in the trailer being offered public feedback by aides on the royals, including criticism that the Windsor family ‘lacked compassion’.

Tony Blair, prime minister in the years following Diana’s death, is dubbed ‘King Tony’ in one scene, as the portrayal of his perceived power during his first term is dramatised.

The series also depicts Prince William as overwhelmed as he gets out of the car to greet thousands of mourners gathered at Kensington Palace in the days after his mother was killed in a car crash in a Paris underpass in 1997.

Later, the show suggests friction between father and son, as Prince Charles is seen telling William: ‘We don’t do fathers and sons very well in this family’.

There’s plenty of feel-good moments as the teaser reaches its crescendo though.

It’s thought a large chunk of part two of the final series of The Crown will focus on the blossoming relationship between the now-Prince and Princess of Wales onto our screens.

In the trailer, Prince William is seen looking doe-eyed as he spots his future wife in the now famous fashion show. As the trailer closes, they share a passionate first kiss.

Photos released earlier this week showed Meg Bellamy, the 21-year-old actress from Wokingham who was plucked from obscurity to play Kate, recreating the royal’s iconic look as she took centre state at St Andrew’s Bay Hotel in 2002.

The first-look images show Meg wearing a recreation of the Charlotte Todd-designed strapless dress with turquoise trim for the scene, with her hair in the same soft ringlet waves.

Posting the photos on X, formerly Twitter, the Netflix account teased the ‘first look at the epic conclusion’ of the royal drama – while Meg herself posted the catwalk snaps on her Instagram account and wrote: ‘It’s nearly timeeee…’

William is thought to have paid £200 for a ticket to sit on the front row of the show with friends and is rumoured to have turned to one of them and said: ‘Wow, Kate’s hot.’

It is said to be the turning point in the couple’s relationship, as they eventually went from close friends to developing romantic feelings for each other.

The dress in question went on to sell for a staggering £78,000 at auction following the catwalk show and became one of Kate’s best-known fashion moments.

The pair were studying at St Andrew’s University at the time and met the previous year, although Kate’s catwalk appearance is thought to have been the catalyst for romance.

Kate was working towards an art history degree, while William, who initially enrolled for history of art, had switched to geography.
