Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department later confirmed three victims were killed in the tragedy, along with the suspect who has not yet been named.

The suspect, referred to by LVMPD as “he” is believed to be 67, CNN reported.

Sources also told local news the suspect recently applied for a job at the university and was denied, News Now affiliate KLAS in Las Vegas reported.

Cops and SWAT teams swarmed the shooter’s home in Henderson, per the Fox affiliate KVVU.

Officers announced on a loudspeaker that they would be heading into the suspect’s apartment.

Two flash-bang devices reportedly went off and smoke was seen in the apartment complex, according to the outlet.

The victims of the shooting have not yet been named.

One victim was reported to be in critical condition but is now stable.

During a press conference, the LVMPD Sheriff said there “could have been countless additional lives taken” had it not been for the swift and quick response of officers.

The suspect began shooting on the fourth floor of Beam Hall and continued on multiple floors.

The suspect exited Beam Hall and was immediately met with a UNLV police officer who engaged them in a shootout.

The UNLV police officer struck the suspect and killed him.

UNLV sent a text out to students once the shooter on campus was confirmed and informed everyone: “This is not a drill. Run, Hide, Fight.”

UNLV STAFF & STUDENTS ON THE SCENE

The U.S. Sun spoke with Ryan “RT” Thorp, Production Manager, UNLV-TV about his speedy response to get everyone in the Greenspun Media building to safety during the shooting.

“I was in my office when I heard people running into the media facility,” Throp said.

“I poked my head out and I saw them packing into a different office. That was when I heard my computer alert saying active shooter, this is not a test, run-hide-fight.

“I said ‘oh f**k’ and ran to everywhere I knew there were students in the facility. They were in the TV studio and control room, the newsroom, podcast studio.

“I told everyone I found to shelter in place. I locked doors where I could and I ran to my office and shut the door.

“I have a pair of fat drumsticks and I pulled them out of my backpack and was ready to fight if I needed to.

“I thought many times that I couldn’t leave until I knew everyone else was out of the media facility.”

The U.S. Sun has also spoken with Jennifer Ream UNLV-TV Senior Producer.

Ream explained that she had to shelter in her office as the shooting occurred.

Along with that UNLV responded quickly to get every into safety.

“I was on campus, and sheltered in my office,” Ream said.

“The university response was great. We were notified quickly and received updates as the events unfolded.”

A law student at UNLV, Josh Lozano, has also told The U.S. Sun: “I could hear sirens and gunshots during the exam but I didn’t think they were gunshots at the time.”

Lozano added he had to be picked up about a mile away from campus but that he is currently safe.

NO MORE THREATS

The sheriff confirmed there is no further threat to the community and there is no information known yet about a possible motive.

Police responded to initial reports of shots fired at 11:45 am local time.

Minutes later, UNLV urged people to evacuate in a social media post shared on X, formerly Twitter.

Just after noon, cops confirmed that there appeared to be several victims.

People were urged to avoid the area before cops warned at 12.19pm that they had received reports of additional shots being fired.

All UNLV and Nevada System of Higher Education institutions in southern Nevada were closed.

Wednesday night’s scheduled basketball game between UNLV and the University of Dayton has been canceled.

PRESIDENT BIDEN’S RESPONSE

President Biden was already scheduled to visit Las Vegas on Friday.

The shooting has not changed those plans, according to NBC News.

Biden has commented on the shooting.

“The University of Nevada at Las Vegas became the latest college campus to be terrorized by a horrific act of gun violence, and the community is still awaiting information on casualties,” Biden said in a release.

“Jill and I join citizens across our nation in praying for the families of our fallen, and for those who were injured during these latest acts of senseless violence.

“We are also grateful for the courageous work of law enforcement—who risked their own safety to bring an end to these deadly shooting sprees.”

SWAT teams and first responders’ vehicles were seen racing to the scene.

Police wielding long guns have also been seen on the roof of some of the university’s buildings, per footage from local NBC affiliate KSNV.

An eyewitness at the scene told Fox News that the shooting appeared to happen “out of nowhere.”

Brett Forrest, a local reporter, shared the lockdown alert he received.

“I’m currently locked down inside a UNLV campus building. Everyone nearby was told to lock down inside here. Police update just pushed out a ‘confirmed active shooter’ alert,” his tweet read.

Another student spoke to KSNV and said he was in a journalism class when the shooting occurred.

“We only looked through the windows for a couple minutes, because … we were nervous if he could shoot up there or not,” the student, identified only as Matthew, told the outlet.

“We did hear a bunch of cops coming in, and we didn’t know what to do, so we just stayed away from the door.”

“This is the most police I’ve ever seen.

“I’m glad to know that they’re here.”

Students have also shared harrowing tales of escape on X.

“Never ran so f**king fast in my life this s**t is so sad,” one student tweeted.

UNLV CLOSE TO VEGAS STRIP

UNLV is located just off of the famed Las Vegas Boulevard where much of the city’s tourism lies.

Beam Hall is centrally located on campus near the university’s theater school, student union, and bookstore.

The hall is one of the main instructional buildings on campus.

Classes are held there daily by a host of different schools within the university, according to NBC News.

The building only has one entrance and exit, the outlet reported.

UNLV is located less than two miles from Harry Reid International Airport, which has been placed on a “security” ground stop, according to the FAA.

The stop affects inbound flights and is due to the police and helicopter response required at UNLV.

There are also road closures in effect in the area to allow police to continue their investigation.

The UNLV campus is located just 15 minutes from Mandalay Bay, where a gunman opened fire on the Harvest Music Festival from his hotel room in October 2017.

That shooting, the deadliest in United States history, claimed 59 lives and left more than 500 people injured.

OFFICIALS RESPOND

Many local leaders and officials have begun to release statements as news of the UNLV shooting continues to spread.

Nevada Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto both acknowledged that their offices are in contact with local law enforcement.

Nevada Assembly speaker Steve Yeager wrote on X: “Grateful for law enforcement. Thinking about and praying for everyone on campus and their loved ones.”

Governor Joe Lombardo said: “My office is in constant communication with @LVMPD, @unlv, and all emergency response partners. If you are on campus, please continue to follow their instructions as the campus is evacuated.”

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman commented on the shooting, saying: “Tragic and heartbreaking news coming out of @unlv. Praying for everyone on campus as law enforcement responds to the situation.”

The Nevada Assembly Republican Caucus issued the following statement thanking the “brave first responders and law enforcement who came to the rescue.”

“Without their heroic actions and bravery things no doubt could have been worse.”
