SENATOR Kevin Cramer’s son had worrying behavior that saw him being taken to a hospital before he was involved in a crash that killed a cop.

Ian Cramer, 42, was driving over 100 mph on two flat tires when he crashed head-on into Deputy Paul Martin’s squad car.

The collision pushed the car “directly into Martin’s person,” launching him for about 100 feet and killing the 53-year-old, according to charging documents.

Cramer’s first court appearance is scheduled for Friday – he is facing several felony counts including manslaughter, fleeing a police officer, and reckless endangerment.

Sen. Cramer released a statement saying: “We ask the public for prayers for the lost officer’s family and colleagues who serve us every day and are grateful for all they do for us.”

Police in Bismarck, North Dakota said Ian Cramer was being taken to the Sanford Health emergency room by his mother on Wednesday over concerns about his mental state.

However, when she got out of the car, Cramer took the wheel and crashed through a door to get out of the ambulance bay at the hospital’s emergency department.

One of Cramer’s sisters tracked the SUV with her cellphone and called the police.

An hour later, Cramer was spotted by a deputy in Mercer County about 70 miles northwest of Bismarck, said the North Dakota Highway Patrol in a news release.

A chase ensued after efforts to stop Cramer didn’t work with an officer from nearby Beulah even using a tire deflation device to take out two of the tires on the Chevrolet Tahoe.

But Cramer kept driving and was seen on North Dakota Highway 200 when Beulah Chief of Police Frank Senn and Martin used more deflation devices and took cover behind their cars.

Cramer swerved and hit Martin’s squad car.

He allegedly tried to flee the scene of the crash before Senn tackled him to the ground.

Senn was injured when Cramer resisted, according to court documents.

Martin was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cramer was evaluated at a hospital before being booked into jail.

Sen. Kevin Cramer wrote that his son “suffers from serious mental disorders which manifest in severe paranoia and hallucinations.”

He revealed that on Wednesday, Ian Cramer said he wanted to visit his brother, Isaac, also known as “Ike.”

Ike Cramer died at the age of 35 from liver and kidney failure in 2018 after battling alcohol addiction for a long time.

Sen. Cramer’s wife, Kris, was worried about Ian’s behavior, which is why she decided to take him to the emergency room that day.

In 2013, Ian Cramer was charged with misdemeanor simple assault for allegedly injuring his brother’s head, which he pleaded guilty to.

His record also includes a citation for driving under the influence in Arizona in 2010, along with several traffic citations as well.

On the day of the crash, Ian Cramer was driving with a suspended license.

Martin, an 18-year veteran of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office., is survived by his wife and three children.

“Our entire community has suffered the tragic loss of Deputy Paul Martin. He is our beloved brother in law enforcement, a husband, father, and grandpa. Our wound is raw, and our hearts are broken,” read a statement by the office on Facebook.

“We will put one foot in front of the other and move forward slowly, honoring all the wishes humanly possible of his wife and family.”
