Piers Morgan has discussed whether Phillip Schofield’s career deserved to be “destroyed” after he admitted having an affair with a younger man who worked as a runner for This Morning. The TalkTV host took to social media to air his views on Friday morning.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Phillip, 61, had “reluctantly declined” to take part in an external review into the circumstances surrounding his departure from ITV. In a report, Jane Mulcahy KC wrote that if the former This Morning host had complied, then there would have been a “risk” to his health.

Following the news that the review was “unable to uncover the relevant evidence” of Phillip’s affair with a younger man until his admission this May, Piers, 58, has had his say. Writing to his 8.7 million X followers on December 8, the columnist said: “This may be an unpopular opinion but what did Phillip Schofield do that justified his expulsion from TV & public life?

“He had a consensual affair with a co-worker who’s made no complaint about it, and his wife’s been supportive too.” Piers added: “Struggling to see why he had to be destroyed?”

This summer, the former Good Morning Britain presenter shared his concerns for Phillip and claimed that he was “struggling” after stepping down from ITV. As per The Sun, the star said: “I’ve been in touch with Phillip and I think he’s struggling.

“It’s tough to leave any big job, let alone when it’s a big scandal. But he’ll be back.”

The father-of-three also claimed that the ex-Dancing On Ice presenter could “bounce back”, and questioned what exactly was so “heinous” about his relationship with a younger colleague.

“Unless a crime was committed or unless the other party involved decides to contradict something that Phillip is saying, you take it for what it is I’m not entirely sure why the world went completely nuts,” he added.

Phillip stepped down from hosting the This Morning sofa in May after he admitted to having a “consensual on-off relationship” with a colleague, whom he met when they were a teenager.

In a statement, issued to MailOnline, he said that the “relationship was unwise, but not illegal” and that it was “now over”.

At the time of the announcement, his former co-star Holly Willougby took to social media and claimed she had previously asked Phillip about the affair.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “It’s taken time to process yesterday’s news. When reports of this relationship first surfaced, I asked Phil directly if this was true and was told it was not.

“It’s been very hurtful to now find out that was a lie.”

Months after Phillip stepped down from the broadcaster, the mum-of-three announced she was also leaving the morning mainstay.

Posting the news to social media, she said: “I have let ITV know today that after 14 years, I will not be returning to This Morning.

“To everyone who has ever worked on the show over the years, thank you so much.”

Following Holly’s statement, Kevin Lygo, managing director of media and entertainment at ITV said the broadcaster was looking “forward to continuing to work with her in the future.”

He said: “We are sad that Holly is leaving This Morning, but respect her decision which we know will have been extremely difficult for her to make.

“Holly is one of the best loved, respected and most accomplished broadcasters in the UK.

“She has been at the heart of This Morning for the past 14 years, and she is adored by our viewers.”

Kevin also added that the star remains a “much loved member of the ITV family”.
