Relatives of the Murdaugh family housekeeper who died in the home where she worked — and who were cheated by Alex Murdaugh out of millions of dollars in settlement money — are speaking out against the disbarred South Carolina attorney and convicted killer.

Gloria Satterfield fell at the Murdaugh home known as Moselle in Colleton County on February 2, 2018. She died more than three weeks later at a hospital from her injuries at age 57.

After her death, Murdaugh told his late housekeeper’s sons to sue him, promising a huge claim from insurance companies. Last month, he pleaded guilty to multiple financial crimes, including pocketing insurance settlement funds from Satterfield’s death that was meant for her two adult sons.

What has Gloria Satterfield’s sister said about Alex Murdaugh?

“Gloria would’ve given Alex anything she had,” Satterfield’s younger sister, Ginger Hadwin, told People in an interview out Monday. “If Alex would’ve asked her for whatever, she would’ve given the shirt off her back to help him. You can’t have a soul to do what he did. He’s a shell of a man.”

Hadwin added of Murdaugh: “He said he would make sure the boys were taken care of. He was just looking out for the boys because he thought a lot of Gloria and he was just going to make sure [her sons] Brian and Tony were taken care of, and to show his appreciation for all the years that Gloria had shown her love, looking out for his family and his boys.”

Satterfield worked as a housekeeper and nanny for the Murdaugh family for more than 20 years before she died, according to NBC News, and those who knew the disgraced legal scion’s family described her as being like a “second mother” to his two sons, Paul and Buster.

Murdaugh was convicted in March of murdering his youngest son Paul, as well as his wife Maggie, who were found fatally shot at the family’s hunting compound in Colleton County on June 7, 2021. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

One of Satterfield’s sons, Michael “Tony” Satterfield, told People that his mother cared deeply for the Murdaugh family. “She loved Maggie and Alex and Paul and Buster just awfully,” Tony, 34, said. “She loved what she did, her job. She took pride in it. She talked highly of them.”

After Satterfield’s death at his home, Murdaugh advised her sons that they should use his former college roommate as a lawyer for the wrongful death claims.

“Every now and then, he would reach out and see how we were doing,” Tony told People. “And kind of update us and say, ‘It’s a hard case, we’re still working on it. Time’s on your side.’”

What has Gloria Satterfield’s son Tony said about Alex Murdaugh’s financial crimes?

But Satterfield’s family eventually learned that the case had been settled for more than $4 million, despite them never receiving a penny and Murdaugh never mentioning it to them. “It made me sick to my stomach,” Tony said.

Last month, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 financial crimes, including money laundering, breach of trust and financial fraud. Satterfield’s family members were among the victims. Murdaugh was handed a sentence of 27 years for the financial crimes.

Murdaugh’s legal team is currently attempting to overturn his murder convictions, alleging jury tampering in the case. His lawyers claim that Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill influenced the jurors’ guilty verdict, charges Hill has denied.
