Alysia was originally arrested for child neglect, before Oklahoma police decided to charge her for the murder as well as obstructing an officer, due to allegedly lying to investigators, local ABC affiliate KOKO reported.

Her husband, who originally faced first-degree murder, has had his charges amended as well and is now facing second-degree murder and the unlawful removal of a dead body.

The couple were supposed to be taking care of Athena and her sister Adina, according to an affidavit obtained by local CBS affiliate KWTV.

The document claimed that the children’s biological mother, Jasmin Brownfield, was dealing with mental health issues, and had not contacted or financially supported the kids since she left.

It was believed that Athena was killed on around Christmas, last year.

After the murder, the 4-year-old was buried on their property.

The small child was not reported missing until January 10, when her older sister was found by a postal worker walking around in Cyril, an hour southwest of Oklahoma City.

Adina had told police that she only left the house because she was “tired of being alone,” since her sister left, according to documents obtained by local ABC affiliate KSWO.

The police immediately began to search for Athena, leading to the arrest of her caregiver.

Jasmin would be arrested months later on May 4, and charged with two counts of child neglect by abandonment.

‘EVIL WORLD’

Athena had her funeral at the end of January 2023 at the Stride Bank Center, in Enid, Oklahoma.

A crowd gathered for Athena, wearing purple ribbons to represent the young girl’s favorite color.

The state senator Roger Thompson spoke at the funeral about Athena’s memory.

“Why did God allow this to happen? I want you to know that’s not wrong to ask,” he said.

“Those who knew Athena and you think about her, and you think about the good times they know that these came from God, and every bit of good in our lives is an ultimate gift from God.”

Those in attendance have left sweet notes for the child.

“Taken too soon from this evil world,” one person wrote.

“Singing & Dancing with all God’s children. We’re soo sorry sweet baby!” another attendee said.
