ELON Musk is facing another major blow as Tesla is about to be overtaken by an electric vehicle rival after admitting that he dug his own grave with the latest product rollout.
A Chinese automaker, BYD Co., is set to surpass Tesla as the world’s most popular manufacturer of electric vehicles.
While BYD isn’t that well-known internationally, experts say that will change soon.
China has recently moved in on Japan as a new challenger for the world’s biggest consumer car exporter with BYD as one of the fastest-growing companies in the market.
Current projections say BYD will overtake Tesla within the next few months.
BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu had his sights on Tesla in the early days of his company’s entrance into the electric car market.
Chuanfu was backed by a major investment from Berkshire Hathaway, the firm of billionaire Warren Buffett.
In a TV interview, Musk ridiculed the company, however, many believe BYD has become a legitimate threat to his empire.
TOUGH CROWD
Tesla has already had a rough 2023 with investors calling for Musk’s resignation after making comments that many deemed to be anti-Semitic.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles also charged the company with fraud over claims that its cars were fully autonomous – they’re not.

Musk even admitted in an earnings call in October that “we dug our own grave with the Cybertruck” after the company missed several deadlines.
The Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019 and has faced major criticism since then.
Many of the billionaire’s die-hard fans were divided over the bizarre vehicle – with some describing its curveless shape as ugly.
Others called out Musk’s claims on X, formerly known as Twitter, of the vehicle also being used as a boat.
“Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy,” wrote Musk.
His words left many motorists scratching their heads.
“Will the ‘Cybertruck’ be as waterproof as Tesla tail lights and battery packs?” wrote one person.
Another posted: “Tesla had a well-known problem with windshield wipers – they just couldn’t figure out how to fix.
“So, in a stroke of genius, they decided to make the Cybertruck waterproof instead. Now, it can be submerged for easy windshield cleaning.”
“Never was a fan of these hubcaps, unless of course they help water propulsion when using your Cybertruck as a boat,” bemoaned another person.
