Michael Wood is a ceramic artist, potter and contestant on The Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown 2024. He is the owner of Wood Stoneware. He lives in Salisbury, N.B.

Michael left his restaurant job of 12 years to pursue pottery. He has six years of experience and recently graduated with a diploma in ceramics from New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. He currently works with several stores that order from his brand, Wood Stoneware, and he dreams of working in pottery full-time.

Michael started making pottery after a five-week evening class. He told CBC: “My journey in ceramics began with a five-week evening class, and I expanded my knowledge through books, mentorships, workshops, and formal education.”

Describing his pottery style in three words, he said: “Gestural, conceptual and ecru”.

Michael Wood, 35, is a contestant on the inaugural season of The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down on CBC and CBC Gem. Award-winning artist and ceramics instructor Brendan Tang and renowned ceramicist and educator Natalie Waddell serve as judges.

“Feeling a blend of excitement and gratitude for this incredible opportunity,” Michael wrote on Instagram. “Thanks to the fantastic team for capturing the essence of our pottery adventure.”

He added: “Ready for this new chapter, and I can’t wait to share the artistry, challenges, and laughter that’s in store on the show. Join me on this thrilling ride starting Feb 8th at 8:00 PM on CBC! Your unwavering support fuels the creative fire. Here’s to the journey ahead!”

Speaking about the possibility of winning The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, Michael said: “My unique perspective on the world and my creativity will set me apart, making me a strong contender to win the first season of GCPTD. My ability to conceptualize and bring distinct ideas to life is a key advantage in this competition.”
