SIX men have been convicted on Wednesday in connection to the shooting death of rapper FBG Duck in 2020.
FBG Duck, born Carlton Weekly, was murdered on August 4, 2020, while shopping near the Gold Coast neighborhood in Chicago.
Investigators were able to connect the shooting to a South Side gang war that was featured heavily on social media and through rap diss tracks.
Charles Liggins, 32; Kenneth Roberson, 30; Christopher Thomas, 24; Marcus Smart, 25; Tacarlos Offerd, 32; and Ralph Turpin, 34, were found guilty on multiple counts, including murder in furtherance of a racketeering scheme.
Jurors found that Liggins committed the murder and wounded Weekly’s girlfriend in the process.
Roberson was an alleged getaway driver along with Offerd.
Thomas was found guilty of murder, using a gun in the murder, and conspiracy to commit the murder.
Turpin allegedly brought the shooters to the area to kill Weekly and was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Smart was another alleged gunman involved in the plot found guilty on five counts.
The trial lasted a little more than three months, said officials.
The men were part of a South Side gang that used music and social media presence to influence violence, including Weekly’s murder, said federal prosecutors.
Surveillance footage and clips shared on social media were used to link the men to the fatal shooting.
“I just want to thank the United States government for doing a very good job on making sure that these guys will never hurt another mom or another child again,” said Weekly’s mother, LaSheena Weekly.
The woman cried and hugged family members as the verdict was read.
“When stuff like that happens to a good person, regardless of what somebody else thinks of them, it ain’t gonna go unpunished,” she said.
Weekly had “beef” with fellow rapper King Von, whose real name was Dayvon Bennett, a leader of the O Block set of the Black Disciples for years.
King Von allegedly placed a bounty on Weekly before his fatal shooting.
Just a few months later, on November 6, 2020, King Von was shot to death in Atlanta Georgia.
“Knowing that they will not do that to another family brings me comfort, knowing they will not terrorize nobody else,” said LaSheena Weekly.
“They’re done, the whole crew. O Block and everything of it is done.
“I could never want another mother to feel like this, to see their child shot down in the street like a dog. They had FBG Duck death parties. That’s how much it meant to them.”
The mother said she and her family were planning a different kind of party to celebrate the justice served for her son.
Sentencing is scheduled for August and September where the men are all facing mandatory life sentences.
The defense for the six men will likely appeal the convictions.
