Thick plumes of black smoke fill the air as horrified drivers grind to a halt.

A trucker’s dashcam captured the shocking clip as they drove along the highway near Collier County on Friday.

The pilot was attempting to make an emergency landing when the jet – carrying five people – crashed into the road.

Pilot Edward Daniel Murphy, 50, and co-pilot Ian Frederick Hofmann, 65, were killed when the plane hit the highway and exploded.

Crew member Sydney Ann Bosmans, 27, and passengers Aaron Baker, 35, and Audra Green, 23, were meanwhile seen narrowly escaping the inferno.

Heart-stopping footage shows the trio flee the burning wreckage as the

In the video, passing motorist Kyle Cavaliere can be heard shouting: “Is there anybody else in there?”

“Yes, yes our pilots,” a woman screams back.

Asked if the pilots were alive, the frantic woman replied: “I don’t know. I don’t know much else.”

The three survivors were rushed to hospital.

The plane, a Bombardier Challenger 600 series, took off from an airport at Ohio State University in Columbus at around 1 pm.

It was scheduled to land at Naples Airport but instead requested an emergency landing and crashed at 3:15 pm.

Two miles out from Naples Airport, the pilot reported an engine failure to air traffic control.

The pilot warned that they’d lost both engines before contact with the aircraft was lost.

Airport workers then saw smoke rising from the highway a few miles away.

Almost an hour after the plane went down, the Federal Aviation Administration said I-75 would be closed between the northbound and southbound exit of MM 105 for the next 24 hours.

Images from traffic cameras showed fire rescue and police units at the crash site with flames just feet from passing drivers.

Witnesses said the jet was attempting to land on the I-75 highway but its wing clipped a car and dragged it before slamming into the wall, leading to the deadly explosion.

Brianna Walker, 26, described the horror of seeing the plane drag the car in front of hers.

“It’s seconds that separated us from the car in front of us,” she said.

“The wing pulverized this one car….The plane was over our heads by inches. It took a hard right and skidded across the highway.”

The witness said there was a burst of flames from the plane followed by a large boom. “It feels unreal like a movie,” she added.

“It was seconds between us dying.”

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The National Transportation Safety Board has asked the public to supply videos of the jet before it crashed to help determine the cause.
