JACKSON, Ohio (WCMH) — Three people are dead after a plane crash Saturday afternoon in Jackson County while on its way to Florida.

A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson confirmed that a plane crashed at around 12:35 p.m. near the James A Rhodes Airport in Jackson, Ohio. Three people died as a result of the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Jackson post identified the three people killed in the crash as pilot and owner Daniel T. Baker, 44, of Jackson; Zebulon D. Logan, 45, of Lucasville; and Dan Baker, 75, of West Portsmouth. They were the only people on board the plane at the time.

According to OSHP, a Piper PA 32 Cherokee Six crashed into a field about 1/4 of a mile from the airport.

The sheriff’s office said it was alerted to a fire near the airport and when the Jackson Fire Department arrived, firefighters discovered the plane burning just off of Barton Road. As firefighters extinguished the fire, EMS responders identified three people inside the plane.

According to the sheriff’s office, family members of the victims said the men were flying to Florida to pick up a car Logan bought.

Barton Road and Keystone Station Road reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m. after being closed due to the investigation into the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were notified of the crash, which remains under investigation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office were assisted at the scene by the Jackson County coroner’s office, the Franklin Township Fire Department, and Oak Hill Police Department.
