Conservative podcast host Joe Rogan expressed extremely mixed feelings over the unveiling of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s latest invention in a recent episode of his show.
Late last year Tesla announced their latest innovation, Optimus Gen 2, humanoid robots.
“God damn it Elon, what are you doing?” Rogan exclaimed as he watched the demonstration video of the robots’ capabilities during a recent episode of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast.
The robots have opposable thumbs with tactile finger sensors that are so precise and gentle they were able to handle eggs in a demonstration video.
These machines walk upright like humans and are able to balance and control movement enough to do squats and yoga poses.
The bots are life-size as well, standing at 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 121 lbs.
Equipped with artificial intelligence, the robots are able to interact with the world around them autonomously.
“Wow! This is nuts… I love the fact that it can extend its fingers, it’s moving its hands exactly like a person does,” Rogan said.
Musk has said he aims for his invention to take over mundane and laborious tasks for humans.
Musk said the bots would be able to do “repetitive and boring work” on the Lex Fridman podcast.
However, Rogan seemed equally impressed and concerned with the robots’ potential.
“This is I, Robot,” he commented, referencing the 2004 sci-fi movie starring Will Smith.
The end of the demonstration video teases viewers with “Stay tuned to see what Optimus will do next.”
“I’ll tell you what Optimus will do next — it’s going to come out of an aircraft carrier, thousands of them, with machine guns,” Rogan said in response.
“Oh it’s dancing! It’s gonna dance after it kills everybody,” Rogan joked.
“I hope they’re friendly,” his guest Dr. Debra Soh responded.
“They’re not gonna be, they’re not gonna have any need to be,” Rogan replied.
However, Musk has also said of his machines that he would like them to act as companions for people, saying the bots would make “the perfect buddy.”
“It could develop a personality over time that is unique. It’s not like all the robots are the same,” he said.
Rogan proceeded to discuss the investment opportunities in robotics and AI companies such as Tesla, which the podcaster pointed out is a company Musk says is primarily an AI company.
“Tesla is an AI/robotics company that appears to many to be a car company,” the CEO has said on his platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Rogan finished off the episode discussing the merits of investing with two companies: UiPath and Rockwell Automation.
UiPath is a leading robotics process automation firm, while Rockwell Automation focuses on industrial automation.
The former is owned by Ark Invest ETFs, while the latter has grown through acquisitions, but sees unstable stock performance, according to Rogan.
