Chainsaw Man Chapter 156 Spoilers

Summary

  • Chapter 156 of
    Chainsaw Man
picks up where the previous chapter left off, with Denji in the hospital concerned about Nayuta’s safety.
  • Denji is currently being held by Public Safety in a maximum security Devil detention center, undergoing a brutal kind of torture in the interest of unknown experiments.
  • A girl student has arrived to apparently rescue Denji, though the only hint at her identity is the mention of “war” alongside her appearance.

Tatsuki Fujimotomo’s Chainsaw Man has really picked up the pace in its past few chapters. After the slow build that saw the Chainsaw Man Church’s rise to power guided by Fami, the Famine Devil, things came crashing down on Denji. Chapter 156, “Whup Whup Whup Whup Bzzz Split Split” takes readers through the aftermath of the recent conflict, and further complicates things with new villains.

The biggest personal conflict that Denji has had throughout this arc was that he was unable to transform into Chainsaw Man under threat of repercussions by Public Safety. Even though that wasn’t what he wanted, Denji agreed because it seemed like what was best for him and Nayuta. Sadly, CSM‘s latest chapter shows exactly what those repercussions are, and they’re even more devilish than Chainsaw Man himself.

Chainsaw Man is one of the most popular series today, and other anime and manga should follow its lead.

What Happened to Nayuta in CSM Chapter 156?

Chapter 156 opens with Denji in a frenzy out of concern for Nayuta’s whereabouts. In the previous chapter, Nayuta’s fate was left ominous, and it was generally suggested that something terrible happened to her. In Ch 155, just as Nayuta is about to get jumped by an angry mob, the scene switches to a simple image of Denji and Nayuta’s house burning down. This subtle imagery could have hinted at one of two things: it could either have meant that Nayuta was killed or badly harmed by the crowd, or it could mean that she snapped and killed them all with her devil powers. Either situation would prove tragic for Denji, because Nayuta is the most important person in his life. Whether Nayuta was killed or chose the path of evil, Denji would surely end up hurt either way.

In the hospital room with Denji is Hirofumi Yoshida, the Public Safety Hunter assigned the mission of keeping an eye on Chainsaw Man. Denji desperately pleads with Hirofumi to tell hiim Nayuta’s whereabouts, but Hirofumi tells Denji that not only does he not know where Nayuta is, but Denji has been asleep in the hospital for a week. This chilling revaluation puts Denji in an even more distressed state, but Hirofumi then injects him with some sort of drug that puts Denji to sleep.

Everything We Know About Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man is one of the decade’s biggest shonen series and audiences are already excited to see its first movie, Reze Arc!

After knocking Denji out, Hirofumi walks into the next room to greet a group of Public Safety Devil Hunters, including Fumiko Mifune. Fumiko asks Hirofumi “are they seriously going to dismember Denji senpai?” to which Hirofumi simply responds “yeah.” Fumiko then goes on to request that she can pluck out some of Denji’s hair or nails to add to her lcollection” before it’s too late. Fumiko was always a self-centered person who – despite being a fan of Chainsaw Man – never actually cared about Denji at all. This was already shown when Fumiko ran away to save herself during the mayhem with the anti-Chainsaw Man mob. If she truly cared for Denji’s well-being, she would surely have stuck around to help him and Nayuta.

Fumiko’s weird obsession with Chainsaw Man places a mirror to Denji’s relationship with Nayuta in several ways. While Fumiko only cares about Chainsaw Man, Nayuta truly cares about Denji, and doesn’t care whether he’s Chainsaw Man or not. This is important because Fumiko is a human being and a Devil Hunter, the very thing that Denji was at the start of the series. As a Devil Hunter, Denji was supposed to be working in the interest of the people, but the separation between a person and a devil becomes thinner when considering how Nayuta appears more capable of genuine love than Fumiko is. Even though the Devil Hunters were always a secondary antagonist throughout this arc, they’ve finally made the jump to becoming full-blown villains, and it could have interesting consequences on how Denji perceives humanity going forward. Denji was always an outcast who never had a place in society, with the only thing giving him some semblance of hope being his becoming a Devil. Now that humanity genuinely fears Chainsaw Man and even Public Safety is against him, Denji seems to have more in common with the Devils than with humans.

With the Public Safety Devil Hunter’s true intentions revealed, the next scene in the manga shows Denji being held in a maximum security prison for Devils, called the Tokyo Devil Detention center – a place where no Devil has ever escaped. He is shown strapped to a gurney, being dismembered in the most gruesome ways. The truly dark part of this is that it seems he is being repeatedly dismembered, as suggested when one of the surgeon’s assistants comments that they need to bag up “right leg 26.” As a Devil Hybrid, Denji has the power to regenerate from injured and even heal lost limbs, though it requires a huge amount of blood. As things stand, it appears he is constantly being fed blood and harvested for parts, though for what actual purpose remains unknown.

It could be that these parts of the Chainsaw Devil are being used to somehow create new hybrids, or for other sinister experiments. Considering the rise of Fake Chainsaw Man has become such a prominent theme in this arc, it might not be impossible to create copies of Chainsaw Man’s Devil powers using his parts, adding another layer to the issue. It’s also notable that they’ve currently been focused entirely on dismembering Denji’s legs, while his arms remain intact. The reason for this is a mystery as well, but there appears to be some significance to his legs specifically, as Fujimoto alludes to “legs” more than once in this chapter.

10 Best Chainsaw Man Villains, Ranked

Chainsaw Man villains aren’t always what they seem, they’re calculated, dangerous, and sometimes heroic.

As Denji’s legs are being repeatedly cut off in the Tokyo Devil Detention Center, a sign of hope appears in the form of another set of legs. More specifically, a female pair of legs with high socks indicating that she is a student, is shown standing in front of the Detention Center, seemingly planning to infiltrate it. This pair of female student legs can belong to a number of characters, but there is one additional detail provided that seems to hint at her identity being Asa. A new, unnamed Devil Hunter tasked with keeping an eye on Denji comments that “it would take a war to compromise this facility’s safety.” Being that Asa is possessed by Yoru, the War Devil, she would definitely be the perfect person to start a war at the Detention Center.

Of course, Fujimoto has never had issue with subverting expectations, so it may be that he included the “war” comment to intentionally throw fans off the trail of who the person’s identity really is. Considering Denji has been concerned over Nayuta’s safety, it could be Nayuta herself who has come to rescue her big brother. Considering the uncertainty of her fate in the previous chapter, this would be a great surprise, though it’s far more likely that she was taken captive or even killed due to the imagery that accompanied her disappearance. Some fans have even suggested that the girl coming to Denji’s rescue might be Reze. As great as this would be for Reze fans, and just in time for her film debut, there’s not much reason to believe this to be the case. Even if it isn’t Asa who has come to Denji’s rescue, the notion of war will surely only increase she, and Yoru’s War Devil powers in the inevitable fight to come.
