Golfer Thomas Detry suffers six-putt meltdown at the Cognizant

Belgian golfer Thomas Detry went into the second round of the Cognizant Classic knowing that he was in danger of missing the cut and in need of a bounce-back after shooting two-over par on Thursday.

But his round came crashing down around him on the sixth hole as he carded a quadruple-bogey eight thanks in part to six putts.

After reaching the green in two, Detry had a 57-foot putt that he just blew past the hole – leaving him a five foot putt for par.

Detry pulled his par putt to the left of the hole and that’s where the collapse truly began.

He confidently strode to his ball and didn’t even set his feet before hitting his bogey putt, which hit the back of the cup and popped out.

Detry didn’t set his feet again and tapped it, only for the ball to rim out of the cup once again – coming to rest almost exactly where his par putt started.

For shot number seven, Detry took a breath to compose himself and hit the putt – but for a third time in a row, it rimmed out of the hole.

It came to rest less than a foot away from the cup and he tapped that in to finally end a disaster of a hole.

The sixth hole at PGA National was something of an albatross (not the good kind) around Detry’s neck this week.

In the first round, he carded a double-bogey six – the only double of the day for the Belgian.

One imagine he wishes that was his same luck on Friday. Unfortunately, in addition to the quadruple bogey, he carded a double on the par-4 14th hole as well.

Add to that five bogeys and only two birdies, Detry ended up shooting nine-over for the round and 11-over for the tournament.

That put him dead last in 143rd – finishing four shots behind the next-worst golfers who had a five-way tie at seven-over.
