(NewsNation) — Just last week, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were in Texas getting a firsthand look at the migrant situation that has plagued the state for years.

On Tuesday, Texans go to the polls for primary elections, where immigration is one of the top issues.

Texas is one of the biggest states taking part in Super Tuesday. It’s been hit hard during the migrant crisis with the city of Eagle Pass being in the epicenter.

Gov. Greg Abbott has taken matters into his own hands as he signed off on a bill that would allow law enforcement to start arresting those who crossed illegally. SB4 now is on hold as the Supreme Court will weigh in on whether the state of Texas has the authority to implement that bill.

In February, officials encountered about 189,973 people trying to cross the southern border. In the El Paso sector, there were close to 24,000 encounters for the month. Del Rio saw 14,110 while the Rio Grande Valley had 11,952.

“It is the number one issue,” Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, said. “Border security is very important to Texans. Whether you live on the border or whether you live in a major city it absolutely impacts us.”
