Jonathan Ross took up hosting duties in an ITV first as the UK network live-streamed the Oscars on Sunday evening.

The talk show host was joined by a panel of stars as well as a rotating line of guests throughout the evening during the live broadcast, offering bits of insight and commentary on Hollywood’s biggest night.

Nothing seemed to be off limits for the comedian as he even took aim at pop star Ariana Grande’s red carpet attire after she presented one of the biggest Oscar awards.

The 30-year-old sported a puffy pink dress invoking her character from the upcoming Wicked blockbuster, but Jonathan seemingly didn’t spot the reference.

He declared as the ITV coverage switched back to his studio: “Nice to see Ariana having a duvet day.

“It must be hard to decide what to wear,” he seemingly sympathized with the actress.

After Ariana presented Best Original Song alongside her Wicked costar Cynthia Erivo, the internet was divided on the star’s look.

While some dubbed her a “queen” and praised her choice for something “unique and different”, others seemed to agree that she had thrown the look together at the last moment.

One joked on X: “Ariana Grande forgot to get dressed and was running late so ran out with her comforter.”

Elsewhere in his live coverage of the Oscars, Jonathan was unashamedly rooting for all of the British and Irish nominees.

After Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest scooped Best International Feature and Cillian Murphy earned Best Actor for Oppenheimer, Jonathan claimed the 96th Academy Awards was “turning into a joke”.

He explained: “An Irishman and an Englishman walk into the Academy Awards and walk out with everything.”

Some viewers weren’t too pleased with Jonathan’s inaugural hosting performance, as some revealed they were switching channels just minutes into his pre-ceremony show as he recapped the nominees, snubs and fan expectations for the evening.

On X, fans declared his commentary “cringe” and “utterly painful” with one dubbing it “hell on Earth” for his “awful jokes” and “forced laughs from his few guests”.
