Community Corner: National Child Abuse Prevention Month

SAVANNAH, Ga ()- April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month, a time to recognize families and communities that are working together to prevent the maltreatment of our most valuable resource.

Right Side Child and Family Advocacy (CASA) is bringing awareness to the needs of care, by leaving a visible reminder in the community.

Terry Wright, a CASA volunteer, joins News 3 Kim Gusby on today’s Community Corner to discuss more.

On Tuesday, CASA planted pinwheels at Grayson Stadium in honor of National Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Each pinwheel represents a child in foster care, which does not always mean that the child has been abused, but the non-profit wanted to bring awareness to all kids that are in the system.

There were 400 pinwheels planted.

Wright mentioned that one of CASA’s main goals is to make the community aware of child abuse and prevention.

CASA has partnered up with The Savannah Bananas for this project.

Jesse and Emily Cole, the owner and founder of Banana Foster, started due to them being involved in the foster system.

The Coles fostered and have now adopted two kids out of the system.

It is their overall goal to educate the community on the opportunities to foster children and to get rid of some of the stigma that has been associated with fostering children.

CASA has two big events coming up.

One is a silent auction on Thursday, April 4, at Starling Yard from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The next event is Dancing with Savannah Star, which is scheduled for May 3rd. For more information on either event click here.
