Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kimberly Jean Horton, 55, of Morriston, was arrested on Friday and charged with grand theft over $10,000 and engaging in a scheme to defraud after allegedly taking cash from the self-checkout deposit at Walmart approximately 42 times.

Horton worked at the Walmart at 1800 NE 12th Avenue and allegedly took cash from the self-checkout deposit on 42 instances; Walmart reportedly identified $11,256 in missing cash.

Post Miranda, Horton reportedly said she began stealing from Walmart in November 2023 and has taken over $15,000. She said that when it was time to make the deposit from the self-checkout, she would take the money instead of putting it in the safe. She said she took the money to pay her partner’s medical expenses.

Horton has no local criminal history; she has been released from the Alachua County Jail, but her bail amount is not currently available.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
